The Passcode or Password is the most secret key in our tech life. For most of us happened to forget the password of Windows user account. Here we try to show you how to reset forgotten Windows 10  password in just a few minutes. It’s work for all Windows but no matter which windows you have Vista, windows 7, windows 8,1 or 10 and even Windows Servers.

Reset Forgotten Windows 10 Password

The first method is using without third party software. First of all, you must have Windows DVD disc or a bootable USB Flash Drive for booting system.

Step 1: Boot the system with DVD or USB. If you don’t know how to boot your system, see the article about “How to boot a system with DVD or USB?”

2. After booting the system, you will see the Windows setup page. Now press Shift+F10  to open command prompt (CMD).

Step 2:  When the command prompt opened type fsutil fsinfo drives in order to list all available hard disk local drives. See the screenshot.

You see all drives and D:\ must be the windows root directory because c:\ is the system reserved drive for windows boot loader.

To change the directory type d: and press enter then type cd windows\system32 and press enter.

Here you must change Utility Manager (Utilman.exe) to cmd.exe. Before this take a backup of Utility manager file by typing ren Utilman.exe Utilman.bkp. 

Next copy cmd.exe and renamed to Utilman.exe by typing copy cmd.exe Utilman.exe. 

The Utility Manager has been replaced with command prompt. Once restart your system with shutdown -r -t 0 command and boot it normally.

In the log in page of Windows when you click on utility manager in the left corner of the window, the command prompt will open with full privilege.

With net user command, you can create a new user, modify properties of existing user and reset it’s password.

Here I reset Username of Shais by typing net user shais 123. Finally, close the command line page and try to login with new password.

Method 2: Reset Windows 10 Password with iSeePassword Windows Password Recovery Pro

If you forgot your password, boot your computer to enter Windows login screen. A reset password option will appear when you type the wrong password and hit enter. Click on the option and follow the wizard guide. This is only for the user who has a pre-created password reset disc.

The BitLocker Drive Encryption is a full disk encryption feature included with Pro editions of Windows. It is and enterprise level of Windows Features. So the BitLocker is not for basic and home edition of any Windows. If you want to use this feature of your Windows Operating system, in order to protect your data from loss, theft, or hackers, your must have at least Windows 8 Pro edition. The BitLocker drive encryption is available in the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, then it is not only for Windows 8. The graphical BitLocker interface in Windows Vista could only encrypt the operating system volume, encrypting other volumes could be achieved through an included command-line tool

How to Enable BitLocker Drive Encryption?

In this article I’m going to test BitLocker on Windows 10 and it must work the same as equivalent edition of Windows. Using BitLocker drive encryption is easy, but the most important things is to do not forget your BitLocker password when you encrypt a drive.

So go to Windows control panel, in Windows 10 press Windows button + X then press P to open control panel or search Bitlocker on Windows Start menu. It is the shortest way to reach Bitlocker. Now open Bitlocker Driver Encryption and you must see a page like screenshot.

Here we have two types of drive encryption. One is for Operating system drive which is contain the Windows system files and startup files and another is Fixed data drive which is only keep non Windows files. Firs try to enable for Fixed drive like drive D: and F:.

Enable BitLocker Drive Encryption for Fixed Data Drives

It is easy, just click Turn on BitLocker for each fixed drive you need to enable it. I’m try on drive D: which is a fixed data drive.

On the Chose how you want to unlock this drive page, check the Use a password to unlock the drive, then enter the password. Enter some strong password, should contain small and capital alphabets, numbers, symbols and the length must be at least 8 characters. Don? So press enter or click Next.

Now save the BitLocker recovery key to a file, your Microsoft account or print it to paper. The easiest way is save to a file, write or print it.

Note: don’t forget to save your password to safe place. If you forgot your password, you will loss your files.

When you have saved the password click Next. On the next page leave the default, Encrypt used disk space only… and click Next. 

Now the system ask you, are you ready to encrypt your drive? Simply click start encryption.

Let the BitLocker drive encryption completely encrypt your drive. It take a while and depend on your drive files.

Now, your drive is successfully encrypted and it has locked with a golden lock. In order to unlock it, click twice and enter the password.

You can Manage BitLocker options from Bitlocker page. changing password, Turn it on or off, and even remove password.

Windows Operating System is weak against Local Password Cracking tricks. It is not only Windows, the other OS like Linux, Mac OS are also the same. But you can enable Syskey to protect Windows against local password cracking. By default, Windows doesn’t protect the system from bringing any changes to the SAM database. In order to protect Windows from local password cracking, Microsoft had set the Syskey within Windows NT 4.0 SP3. The Syskey utility can encrypt the hashed password information in a SAM database in the Windows operating system using a 128-bit RC4 encryption key.

Enable Syskey To Protect Windows

When you enable Syskey on Windows, the system asks you the Syskey password before displaying Windows log on-page. It seems like modern multi-factor authentication which Microsoft brought you a decade ago!

Syskey has the same configuration on all Windows. In order to enable syskey to protect windows, type “syskey” on Windows run and press enter. It will open syskey page and you must configure it.

On the Syskey (Securing the Windows Account Database) page click Update button. Before enabling Syskey, read the details and information on the pages.

Now on the Startup key select Password Startup and enter the password for syskey. The password must be strong enough to do not guess and crack easily. When done, just click OK.

When prompt that The account database Startup key was changed. Click OK and the syskey page will close. Don, the syskey enabled successfully.

After enabling Syskey on your Windows, it will ask you the password key when Windows has started up. This happens before displaying log on page of Windows. So till here, you protect the log on a page from bypassing Windows login page tricks which we talked about on the “Reset forgotten Windows Password” post.

To test the syskey, once restart your computer and see the start-up password prompt at startup.

Just enter the password of syskey that you enabled before. Try to remember the password or write somewhere else. If you forgot the password you are not able to login to your System. It’s possible to bypass syskey password, but is time-consuming and need some third-party tools to reset the password.

In Windows operating systems, System Restore and Shadow Copies are used to create restore points that can be used to return your system files and settings to an earlier point in time without affecting your personal files.

• System Restore is enabled by default when you install Windows. It creates restore points automatically every week, and just before significant system events, such as the installation of programs like antivirus, Office, Adobe software, or device drivers.
• Shadow Copies is not enabled by default. You must configure it before you can use it to protect your system or your files from deletion. Shadow Copies creates a copy of a file before any changes are made to it. You can configure Shadow Copies to create preview copies automatically or manually.

How to Delete System Restore and Shadow Copies?

Deleting some other extra files on your system needs to be done carefully. However, you don’t need to worry about deleting system restore points, because they only remove cached restore points that were created when changes were made to your system. System restore points keep only the last restore point.

Knowing how much disk space is reserved by restore points, depends on your system’s installation date. If you have been using your system for one year, the caches might be reserved for half of your system drive.

To see the installation date of your Windows, type the “systeminfo” command on the command prompt (cmd.exe). This will show you the entire system information. You can then find out the time of your system’s installation from the screenshot.

To free up a huge amount of space from extra caches, go to System Properties > System Protection tab. Under the protection systems, you will see the enabled ones with the Protection is On label.

To open System Properties, right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties. Then, click on the Change Settings link on the right side of the screen.

Alternatively, you can type Sysdm.cpl on the Run or cmd prompt.

In my system, it’s only enabled for the Windows drive. So let’s try to delete it. To delete system restore and shadow copies, follow these steps:

1. Go to My Computer and right-click on the Windows Drive.
2. Click Properties.
3. On the General tab, click Disk Cleanup.
4. It may take a few moments for Disk Cleanup to estimate the amount of space that can be freed up.
5. Select the System Restore and Shadow Copies checkbox.
6. Click Clean up system files.

Disk Cleanup will then delete the system restore and shadow copies from your computer. For more information, you can read the articles about Disk Cleanup and temporary files. How to delete temporary files in Windows? It is also a good practice to clean up the system.

So, on the Disk Cleanup, click the Clean up system files button. This will open the System Cleanup. On the Disk Cleanup for the drive (C:) page, click the More Options tab. You can see and delete System Restore and Shadow Copies from here. Read the details and click the Clean up button to completely remove and delete system restore and shadow copies.

Now, check your system drive. It freed up my system drive by over 35 GB, and I’m really happy. Do it on your system and get your hard disk free from cached files.
