2. In the new window, click on the Network and Sharing Center.
3. On the top left-hand side, click on the Changed advanced sharing settings.
4. Turn on network discovery in the private/public/domain/all networks.

2. In the Advanced Sharing window, you can change the share’s name and limit the number of users that can access this folder simultaneously, and write comments for users.
3. Click on Permissions to specify the type of permissions and users you want to share with.

4. If you want to specify the user, click on the Add button, write the user’s name in the text box, and click on the Check Name button. Or click on the Advanced and Find Now button to find and select the existing users manually.

5. After selecting the user, you can now check the Allow or Deny boxes to define permission access to users. When you specify the permissions for users or groups, click Ok.

Note: there are three types of share permissions:

1. Full control: the user can read, write, change, delete, and even change the permissions type.
2. Change: the user can read, write, execute, and delete the folder.
3. Read: the user can read and view the content. (This is the default permissions)

Fix file sharing problems

After you shared a folder and it did not work or did not show up in the network on other computers, you may need to enable some services on your computer.

1. Search Turn Windows Features on or off in the search box or start menu and open it.
2. Scroll down and find SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support in the new tiny window and expand it. Check SMB 1.0/CIFS Client. Restart your computer.

3. Furthermore, if you still have problems, open the search box and search for Services and open it. Find Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication, double click on each of them to open and set the start type to Automatic and Start them.

4. Other services you need to set to Automatic and start are SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host.

After you set these four services to Automatic and start each of them, you need to restart your computer. After the restart of your computer, you can share folders in the network.

• Save and Open; if you choose the Save and Open option, you accept the transformation, and after you receive the file, the file automatically opens.

How to share links through nearby sharing?

If you want to share a website or a web page‘s link with another device, you can do it using Microsoft Edge. NTFS permissions are available for those formatted drives with the NTFS file system both in Windows and Windows Server. The configuration in both Windows client and Windows Server are the same. The following article will guide you on how to set NTFS permissions in Windows Server 2022 for groups or users.

Setting NTFS permissions for users.

To set the NTFS file system, open file explorer and right-click on the folder or file, you want to implement the permissions. Then, click on the properties and click on the security tab in the new dialogue box. You can see some important users and groups already exist:

1. Authenticated users: This includes all the users who login into the System successfully (Windows Client)
2. System: Specialized group from the operating System
3. Administrator: The user who login into the System and have administrative privileges.

If you want to add or delete a new user or group from the list, click on the Edit button. To delete a new user or group, select the intended user or group from the list and click on the Remove button. Moreover, if you decide to add a new user or group, click on Add button.

Write the name of the user or group in the search box and click on the Check Names. Alternatively, you can select the new user or group by clicking on the advanced button and then the Find Now button. Finally, click on Ok.

Basic NTFS Permissions

Generally, there are two types of NTFS permissions; Basic and Advanced permissions. The six types of permissions that are easily accessible to the administrator are called the Basic types of permissions:

1. Full Control; the user has access to the System entirely and even can control the permissions.
2. Modify; the user can bring changes and delete the files and folders.
3. Read and execute; the person can read the data or file and run it.
4. List folder content; it shows lists of all the files and folders that exist in the selected folder, but you can read or execute those files or folders.
5. Read; this type of permission allows the user only to read the file.
6. Write; users can create new files and write new data.

If you click on the Advanced button, a new window pops up that enables you to edit or remove the user. Additionally, another button, Edit or View (When it is the view, you cannot bring changes, you should disable the inheritance, then you can edit)also exists next to them. If you click on the edit button, a new dialogue window with basic permissions shows up; a hyperlink on the right-hand side, “Show Advanced Permissions”, leads you to more special permissions.

Allow or Deny

While giving permission access to the user or group, you notice two columns in the permission types section: Allow, and Deny. The deny permission is rarely used, and it is used when it is necessary to override permissions.

Inheritance vs. explicit permissions

You can assign permissions to a folder explicitly or by inheritance. If permission is set by default or by the user’s action, called explicit permissions. On the other hand, when an object or folder, or file receives permission because of its parent that is called inheritance permissions. To illustrate it further, there is a folder “MyFile”. You explicitly give Modify permission to this folder; all the subfolders in the MyFile folder will inherit that permission by default.

However, you can stop all the sub-folders from inheriting. To do this, right-click on a folder or file, then go to the properties of that object. In the Security tab, click on Advanced, and at the bottom of the Advanced Security Setting dialogue window, click on Disable inheritance button. In a new tiny window, a question pops up that asks you what you would like to do with the current inherited permission. Then select the answer from those two options according to your desire, and you are done!

The CIFS filesystem is the preferred method for mounting SMB/CIFS shares on Linux. The in-kernel CIFS filesystem relies on a set of user-space tools. That package of tools is called cifs-utils. Although not really part of Samba proper, these tools were originally part of the Samba package.

To install “cifs-utils” type “apt-get install cifs-utils” in termial.

6. Access Windows shared folder from Linux.

Finally, access the shared folder of Windows 10 from Kali Linux. Try to mount the shared folder with “mount.cifs“command. This will mount the shared folder to the Linux system.

Command details: 

• mount.cifs: is the command for mounting SMB/CIFS shares on Linux.
• //Win10: is the Windows 10 computer name. You can use the IP address as well.
• /SharedFiles: is the name of Windows 10 shared folder.
• /root: Kali Linux, root user.
• /Desktop: desktop directory of the Kali Linux, root user.
• /NetworkFiles: is the folder on the Kali Linux desktop for mounting shared files.
• -o user=shais: is the mount.cifs command option for specifying Windows user name and password.

Install Samba Linux File Sharing Service

Now, let’s access Windows shared folder from Linux Ubuntu. Before accessing the shared folder from Linux, you must have installed the Sharing Services on your Linux system. If you didn’t, the system would ask you to install sharing services when you attempt to share a folder on Linux.

On the Linux Ubuntu prompt that the sharing service has not installed. You need to install the Windows networks sharing service to share your folders. So click Install service and continue to finalize the sharing services installation.

You should be able to mount the shared folder by using the GUI in Linux, but it’s also very easy to do with the command line. We’re going to use the terminal for accessing shared files quicker.

First, you’ll need the cifs-utils package to mount SMB shares. Just type the “sudo apt-get install cifs-utils” command at the terminal to install cifs-utils package.

After installing cifs-utils package, try to create a folder and mount the Windows SMB share folder with. To create a folder type “mkdir ~/Desktop/WinFiles” command.

To simply share file between VirtualBox and host system just enable VirtualBox file sharing option. VirtualBox allows you to set up “Shared Folders” that both the host operating system and the guest operating system can access. To do the file sharing between VirtualBox and Host, VirtualBox essentially takes a folder on the host operating system and uses network file sharing to make it accessible inside the virtual machine. Configuring a shared folder from the virtual machine’s settings window and then access from network shares.

Share File Between VirtualBox and Host

The important you must know that these options are VirtualBox advanced options and by default file sharing is not enabled in VirtualBox. Try to enable and start sharing files between VirtualBox and host using the below guide.

1. Click on the VirtulBox virtual machine and select Settings from Machine menu tab.

2. On the virtual machine settings, select Shared Folders tab and click add new shared folder button then chose the folder you want to have access inside VirtualBox virtual machine. Note: If you did not install the VirtualBox guest Additional drivers, you would not able to use the VirtualBox shared folder option for file sharing.
