To restore to the previous configuration, you have to create virtual machine checkpoints in Hyper-V. You often make some changes to your virtual machine, but that change doesn’t go well, and you want to restore it to the previous configuration.

Checkpoint Types

We have two types of checkpoints in Hyper-V: standard checkpoints and production checkpoints. The production checkpoint is more stable than the standard checkpoint.

Standard Checkpoints: capture the virtual machine and everything running in virtual machine memory. Formerly it was known as snapshots before windows 10.

Production Checkpoint: saves the virtual machine state but does not save the information about the running application.

Configure Checkpoints in Hyper-V

Follow the steps below to create virtual machine checkpoints in Hyper-V

1. Right-click on the virtual machine name and click on Checkpoint, or select your virtual machine and click on Checkpoint at the right column in Hyper-V Manager. When you click on Checkpoint by default, it creates a standard checkpoint, but you can configure it to create a production checkpoint.

To configure checkpoint settings, open Hyper-V Manager, click on Action, then settings. The screen below appears. Click on Checkpoints in the left menu, check Enable checkpoints and click on Production checkpoints.

Once your checkpoint is created, select your checkpoint and click on Apply.

This screen appears. I suggest clicking on Create Checkpoint and Apply because it creates a checkpoint on the current state of your virtual machines and then applies the previous checkpoint.

A checkpoint is a valuable tool in Hyper-V. It helps try the different applications, settings, and configurations without damaging your machine.

The error of “User account does not have permission to open attachment” in Hyper-V Server can occur when you try to use an ISO located on a network drive as a boot drive for a VM. A workaround is to copy the ISOs on the host machine directly but that’s inconvenient and tedious. Follow these steps to fix the permissions and allow Hyper-V to use images through SMB.

User Account Does Not Have Permission

We can fix the user account that does not have permission to open an attachment in Hyper-v with two stages. The first one granting the Hyper-V server access to the network shared folder and the second stage enabling CIFS delegation on the Hyper-V machine.

To fix this issue you must have an AD domain account to grant the Hyper-V host access to the network share.

1. Grant the Hyper-V Machine Access to the Network Shared File.

1. Right-click the network shared folder and open the properties then click Edit under the Security tab.
2. Click Add in the new window then click on Object Types and tick the checkbox next to Computers and then press OK to apply the changes.

3. Now, type the name of the Hyper-V machine which you want to authorize on the shared folder and then press Check Names to validate. After validating the name just click the OK button to add it.

Note: If you do not tick the checkbox of Computers on Object Types the system will not find your Hyper-V machine. Make sure you’ve ticked the Computer checkbox and also your machine should be joined to the domain.

4. Click OK to close all the opened file sharing permissions windows to complete the first stage successfully.

2. Enable CIFS Delegation on the Hyper-V Machine

The CIFS delegation gives service administrators the ability to specify and enforce application trust boundaries by limiting the scope where application services can act on a user’s behalf. Service administrators can configure which front-end service accounts can delegate to their back-end services.

On your AD domain controller complete the following steps.

1. Open the Server Manager then click Active Directory Users and Computers from Tools menu. Or type the dsa.msc on Windows Run to open Active Directory Users and Computers only using shortcut.
2. Expand domain, and then expand the Computers folder.
3. In the right pane, right-click the Hyper-V Machine name, and then click Properties.
4. On the Delegation tab, select Trust this computer for delegation to specified services only and Use any authentication protocol.
5. Click Add to open the Add Services dialog window.

6. Select the Users or Computers on Add Services window, and type the computer name where the network shared folder is located then validate it by clicking on Check Name and click OK.

7. Select the CIFS service for the file-sharing server and click OK to enable CIFS delegation on the Hyper-V Server.

8. Finally, click OK to close all opened windows. Now you can install operating systems on your Hyper-V server virtual machines via network shared files.

• Process virtual machines are designed to execute computer programs in a platform-independent environment.

Some virtual machines, such as QEMU, are also designed to emulate different architectures and allow execution of software applications and operating systems written for another CPU or architecture. Operating-system-level virtualization allows the resources of a computer to be partitioned via the kernel’s support for multiple isolated user-space instances, which are usually called containers and may look and feel like real machines to the end-users.

Create Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on Windows 10

Creating a virtual machine on Hyper-V is easy, and this tutorial is just a short lab manual guide. You learn how to create a virtual machine in Hyper-V on Windows 10.

Before using Hyper-V on Windows 10 for server virtualization, you need to check your system requirement. It’s terrible that you can not install  Hyper-V role on Windows 10 Home edition.

Hyper-V System Requirements on Windows 10: 

• Windows 10 Enterprise, Professional, or Education
• 64-bit Processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
• CPU support for VM Monitor Mode Extension (VT-c on Intel CPU’s).
• Minimum of 4 GB memory.

You can not install the Hyper-V role on Windows 10 Home. You must upgrade from Windows 10 Home edition to Windows 10 Professional for creating a Hyper-v virtualized environment.

This article is for those, who know the basic of Server Virtualization with Hyper-v. If you don’t know about Hyper-v Virtualization software, I recommend you to read the previews articles of Hyper-V installation and configuration posts.

Hyper-v Virtual Switches

The virtual switch is a logical switch which connects virtual machines. Currently, Hyper-v has three different types of virtual switch which I told the preview article also.

• External: Switch is used to connect the virtual machines to external network and Internet. The virtual machines (Guest) and Host will be on the same network.
• Internal: Switch is used to create network connection between guest machines and the host.
• Private: The private switch is used to create network connection between virtual machines only.

Connect Hyper-v Machines to Internet Using External vSwitch

1. Create an external virtual switch in Hyper-v and then link it to the physical host network card. To create a virtual switch, open Hyper-v Manager then clicks Action and click Virtual Switches Manager.

2. From Virtual Switch Manager, select External virtual switch and click Create Virtual Switch.

3. Type a name for this virtual switch and select the exact physical network card which currently connects your host to the internet then click OK to apply the changes.

4. Now, to connect a virtual machine to the internet just select this external virtual switch as network adapter of the virtual machine.  Let’s test it on a Windows 10 Pro.

5. Run a virtual machine then click File and click Settings then select Network Adapter from Virtual Machine Settings. From right side select the external virtual switch as the virtual switch to connect hyper-v machines to internet.

The virtual machine is successfully connected to the internet through the external virtual switch.

Connect Hyper-v Machines to Internet Using ICS

The second method is using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS is another best practice to connect Hyper-v Machines to the internet. But in this method, you must share the original internet connection for virtual machines. So with ICS, you can connect your all private network machines to the internet. Let’s do it.

The process is the same as creating an external virtual switch. Open the Virtual Switch Manager and create a new one. Only select Internal instead of external the click OK to create the Internal virtual switch.

Enable ICS to Host Machine

1. Type “ncpa.cpl” to Windows Run and press enter to go to network connections of your host machine. Then right-click the Ethernet connection which is connected to the internet then click Properties.

2. On the Ethernet Properties page click Sharing tab then tick the checkbox of Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection then click OK to apply the changes.

3. Now for your virtual machines, you should choose Internal vSwitch as a virtual switch to connect them to the internet.

Yes, it works fine.

In the environment where your internet connection is a Wi-Fi connection, you can use the second method ICS to connect Hyper-v machines to the internet.

The essential Hyper-V configuration article is related to preview “Hyper-v Beginner: A Practical Guide to Virtualization” articles. But in this paper, we will do the initial Hyper-V configuration for our Virtualization Lab in Windows 8.1, 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2 and Server 2016.

Essential Hyper-V Configuration

Let’s start the essential Hyper-v configuration in Windows 8.1. All configuration is same on all Windows, but some options differ between Windows client and Server.

Open the installed Hyper-v using Windows search and pin it to the taskbar for quick access to hyper-v Manager console.

You see the hyper-v manager. There is no guest operating system installed yet. Before installing operating systems and start working, we should do configure some basic settings.

1. Change Default Virtual Machine Directory

By default, Hyper-v keeps installed operating systems on Windows drive, and that is not a good practice. You should modify the default directory. Because if you lose your Windows directory, you still must have the guests operating systems and that is also a good practice to keep separate Windows and System files from other files.

To change directory, click Action then click  Hyper-v Settings or from the right side of Hyper-v Manager click Hyper-V Settings. 

On the Hyper-v Settings page click Browse and select the directory where you want to keep virtual machines hard disks and configuration files.

2. Create Virtual Switch

Virtual Switch in Hyper-v will let you join computers and create a network.

There are 3 type of virtual switch in Hyper-v  Private, Internal and External

• External: Create a switch that allows the Hyper-v guests directory connect to the Internet with your host physical Network Interface Card (NIC).
• Internal: With this type of virtual switch, you can internetwork host with guests machines. You can directly transfer files between virtual machines and the host system.
• Private: Create a private and isolated network which mostly using for testing Lab.

So let’s create a private virtual switch. From Hyper-v Manager page click Action then click Virtual Switch Manager.

On the Virtual Switch Manager page select Private and click Create Virtual Switch button.

Now type the name and description whatever you want then click OK to create the new private switch. See the result, and you must have the newly created Virtual Switch.

Creating Internal virtual switch is the same as a private virtual switch, but you must select internal from the connection type.

To create an External virtual switch, you must select the physical network card from connection type. See the screenshot.

So that is enough for essential Hyper-v configuration. Now try to learn how to create a virtual machine on hyper-v?

3 Creating Virtual Machine on Hyper-V

Now the Hyper-v installed and ready to use for virtualization. So try to create some virtual machines to create your testing Lab.

To create a virtual machine click on the Action > New and Virtual Machine or just click New on the right side of Hyper-v Manager.

On the Before You Begin page read the information and click Next.  If don’t want to see this page again, check the Do not show this page again. 

On Specify Name and Location page, type a name for the new virtual machine according to the operating system you want to install. And specify the location, where you want to keep the virtual machine files, then click Next.

Leave generation 1 selected by default on Specify Generation page and click Next.

Assign the appropriate memory for your new system and then click Next. Here I have assign 2 GB RAM for a Windows 10 virtual machine.

Select one of the virtual switches which we had created previously at virtual switch manager section of this article. When you choose a virtual Switch, click Next.  Remember, you can add more virtual switch later for your virtual machine. But at the time of creating a new virtual machine, you only allow selecting one virtual switch.

Specify the site of hard disk for a new computer. By default, hyper-v set 127 GB dynamic hard disk for a Windows machine.  For now, leave the default and click Next.

On the Installation Options page, select Install an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM, then select the Image file (.sio) and Browse to the directory of Operating system image. Choose the image of windows you want to install it and then click Next. I have selected Windows 10 image.

On the Completing the New Virtual Machine Wizard page click Finish to finalise the process. 

Here is the newly created Windows 10 Pro for essential Hyper-v configuration. Now you completely know how to build a virtual machine. Create as much as a virtual machine you need for your Lab.

4. Import an Old Virtual Machine to Hyper-V

Sometimes you have a Virtual machine from the preview Hyper-v or transferred from other Hyper-v Server. Now try to import it into a new Hyper-v Server.

To import a machine click, Action then clicks Import Virtual Machine. 

On the Import Virtual Machine page browse and select the folder of the virtual machine. Only select the folder which contains the virtual machine hard disks and configuration files and then click Next.

Select the virtual machine and click Next.

On the Choose Import, Type page select Register the virtual machine in-place (use the existing unique ID) and click Next. 

Select the location of the Virtual Hard disk and click Next to go to the summary page and click Finish.

Install Linux Fedora on Hyper-v

For prerequisites to install Linux Fedora on Hyper-v, you must have the Linux Fedora image or DVD. To download the Image, go to its official website and download Linux Fedora. The downloaded image is a live Fedora. The Fedora Workstation Live image allows you to make media for your computer that provides a complete, running Fedora Workstation you can run right away. You can use the Live image to test and play with Fedora without making changes to your hard disk. When you are ready, you can install Fedora to your hard disk from the Live image.

To use this image, you need a drive that can create or “burn” DVDs, or a USB flash drive at least as big as the image.

• Create a Linux Bootable USB

While you are installing Linux Fedora on Hyper-v, you don’t need to have a bootable USB. Because you can use this image directory to install it on Hyper-v or other virtualization software.

1. Open the Hyper-V on Windows 10 and create a virtual machine for Fedora Linux. If you are new with Hyper-v, try to read the Hyper-v for beginners article. A Linux installation on Hyper-v article will help you better.

• How to Install Linux Mint on Hyper-v? Using this article to create a virtual machine.

2. When you have created a virtual machine, open and run with Linux Fedora Image. It will load the Fedora boot section.

3. Select Start Fedora Live and press enter to boot with Fedora live workstation. If you want to test the Fedora before installation, select Try Fedora. Otherwise chose the Install to Hard Drive and continue the installation process.

4. Select the exact language you want to have on Linux Fedora and click Continue.

5. Select the timezone, network interface, and hard disk partition. I’m installing on Hyper-v virtual machine and I do not care about losing files from hard disk. But when you installing on a physical hard disk, make sure of losing files.

6. When everything has been configured, click Begin Installation. On the User Settings page, set a root password and create a user for yourself.

Note: When you creating users for Linux Fedora, check the tick’s of  Make this user administrator to join the user to admins group. 

7. Don’t do anything, let the system will install software, installing boot loader and everything that your system need. Finally when Fedora successfully installed and ready for you to use. Go ahead and reboot to start using it.

8. The final configurations are selecting keyboard, language, timezone and location. Chose all the exact you want then finalize the initial configuration and start using Fedora as the guest machine on Hyper-v beside your Windows 10.

Create Linux Mint Virtual Machine on Hyper-v

So you have undrestand the Linux Mint usage and popularity. Now trying to install Linux Mint on Hyper-V. First of all you need to download Linux Mint from it’s official website. Try to download the latest version. I have downloaded the Cinnamon 64 bit edition with multimedia supported.

1. Open Hyper-v on your Windows 10 and create a new virtual machine for Linux Mint. If you are new with Hyper-v, and don’t know the installation of Hyper-v. Read the “Hyper-v for beginners” and “Hyper-v Configuration” articles.

2. To create a virtual machine, from right side of Hyper-v click New and select New Virtual Machine. The type a name for Linux Mint and select the directory where you want to store Linux Mint files and VHDx files.

3. On the Specify Generation page select the Generation 1 and click Next. The generation 1 support 32-bit and 64 bit guest operating system, while the second one is only support 64 bit and newer hardware and virtualization features.

4. Assign pretty enough RAM for you virtual machine. The Linux Mint do not require more RAM, 1GB will be enough to run it fast on Hyper-v. When you assign the RAM and select Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine then click Next.

5. Select the virtual switch on Configure Networking page. It require to have a virtual switch. Create an external virtual switch before creating a virtual machine or you can add it later as well.

7. For connecting virtual hard disk, leave the default settings and click Next. It is a dynamic virtual hard disk and will not use the entire 127 GB.

8. Select the downloaded image’s of Linux Mint for installation options and click Next. You can install it from CD/DVD drive also, but the fast and best option is using image file.

9. Finally on completing the new virtual machine wizard for Linux Mint, click Finish. It will create the Linux Mint virtual machine.

Finally, the Linux Mint virtual machine has been created on Hyper-v. So let’s install Linux Mint on Hyper-v.

How to Install Linux Mint on Hyper-v?

The Linux Mint virtual machine is ready to install. Just open and click Start button on virtual machine. Let the Linux Mint boot on live mode.

1. On the desktop of Linux Mint, double click on Install Linux Mint.

2. Select the system language and click Continue. This will be your Linux Mint system language, so try to select the right one.

3. On the Preparing to install Linux Mint ensure that the system has enough hard disk space and connected to internet as well. Click Continue to next page.

4. On the Installation Type page, leave the default settings and click Install Now. It will erase the entire virtual disk and install the Linux Mint. Do not select this option when you install dual boot Linux Mint and Windows.

5. Select the location of you system and click Continue. You can change this option later as well.

6. Select the Keyboard layout and click Continue. It’s the typing keyboard on you Linux Mint system. So select the correct and follow the installation.

7. Type you name as user name and select a short meaningful system name and set a strong password then click Continue to start the installation.

The installation configuration has finished. Try to complete the installation and finally once restart the Linux Mint. And just let’s us know your question about Installing Linux Mint on Hyper-v.

You may want to re-install Hyper-v server or Windows 10 that Hyper-v installed. But the Hyper-v virtual machines need to be remain. After installing new Hype-v Server, are able to import virtual machine to Hyper v server without installing new virtual machine.

Just do not delete all Hyper-v virtual machines when you reinstall Hyper-v server. Allwasy keep the hyper-v virtual machines on a separate drive. Never store virtual machines on operating system drive. Because when you want to change operating system, the Hyper-v will removed and the virtual machines with configuration will be remains. Next time you can simply import virtual machine to hyper-v server.

Import Virtual Machine to Hyper v Server

I have many virtual machines from preview Hyper-v. Now I want to import them to my new Hyper-v server. If you have the same case like, so install Hyper-v on new operating system and configure Hyper-v to get ready to host your virtual machines.

This article works on Hyper-v 2008 R2 server to Hyper-v server 2016. Just follow the same steps to import virtual machine to hyper-v server. If hyper v import virtual machine required permissions are missing, comment us the alert messages to help you.

1. Open Hyper-v manager on Windows 10 or Windows server. Right click on Server name and select Import virtual machine to hyper-v.

2. On the Before You Begin page, tick the Do not show this page again and click Next.

3. On Locate Folder window, click Browse and select the exact folder of a virtual machine. It’s important to choose the exact and right folder of the virtual machine you want to import on Hyper-v. If the directory will not be correct, it issue some errors relevant to incorrect virtual machine directory.

4. Select virtual machine and click Next. When you have more than one virtual machine files in a folder, it will shows both virtual machines. You should select one and import them one by one.

5. Simply select Register the virtual machines in-place (use the existing unique ID) and click Next.

6. Select network card for virtual machine and click Next. If you don’t create Hyper-v virtual switch yet, create a new virtual switch from Hyper-v Manager. I have created a private network virtual switch for my virtual machines.

7. On the Summary page, read the summary information and click Finish to complete the task.

8. Finally, check the imported virtual machines on Hyper-v Manager. The virtual machines are imported with all checkpoints or snapshots.

That’s all how to import virtual machines to hyper v server. You can import these virtual machines even into another Hyper-v server. Just transfer virtual machines to other hyper-v server.

There are many ways to transfer files to Hyper v virtual machines in Windows 10 or Hyper-v server. The easiest way in hyper v transfer file from host to virtual machines is using Hyper-v drag and drop files. It’s the builtin features of Hyper-v that let you copy a file from host to hyper-v virtual machines. The other ways are to copy files into hyper-v virtual machines is to mount a virtual hard disk. The third way is using ISO files. It’s also a good way in hyper-v to copy files from host to guest.

Transfer Files to Hyper v Virtual Machines

In this article, I’m going to explain all the ways to transfer files to hyper-v virtual machines. So try to learn one of them to transfer files to hyper-v virtual machines.

The first and secure and the easiest one is using Hyper-v Enhanced Session Mode. The Hyper-v enhanced session mode makes you able to copy and paste the file to hyper-v without any problems. So using this feature need the below configuration.

1. From the Hyper-v Settings, select Enhanced Session Mode and tick the check box of Use enhanced session mode.

The second one is using iso files to copy files to hyper-v virtual machines. It only helps you to transfer files from host to virtual machines, but you can not move files from the virtual machine to host. Mostly it’s used for mounting operating system images and software that compressed into an iso file. To create ISO files from your files and software, better to use a third-party application such as Powers IOS. Currently, Windows doesn’t have builtin GUI and command-line tools to help you create an ISO image file. The Windows AIK has tools to create an ISO file used for Windows deployment Services. But need to download one and a half GB files of Windows AIK.

The Linux Ubuntu Desktop comes with everything you need to run as client desktop. Install Ubuntu desktop in your organisation, school, home or enterprise network. All the essential applications, like an office suite, browsers, email and media apps come pre-installed, and thousands more games and applications are available in the Ubuntu software centre.

We are going to install Ubuntu desktop on Hyper-v using Windows 10. It is the best practice to test or using multiple operating systems on a computer. You need to Download Ubuntu Desktop image from Ubuntu website.

Install Ubuntu Desktop on Hyper-v

Before installing Ubuntu, Install Hyper-v feature on your Windows 10 or Windows Server. Then create a new virtual machine in Hyper-v and start the installation of Ubuntu desktop on Hyper-v virtual machine.

1. From the Hyper-v Manager console run the Ubuntu Linux virtual machine and click the Start to run the virtual machine.

2. On the welcome page select your language and click Install Ubuntu button. The chosen language is going to be your default operating system language. So try to choose the correct language.

3. Click Continue on the preparing to install Ubuntu desktop. Don’t pick the Install this third-party software if they are not required.

4. Select Erase disk and install Ubuntu and click Install Now to begin the installation.

Note: this option will remove the entire disk and create a new partition in order to install the operating system. So be careful when you want to install a dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu Linux installation.

If you need to create more partitions, then choose something else and continue to create more partitions.

5. When you click the Install now button, it prompts that do you write the changes to disk? Click Continue to accept and apply the partition changes.

6. When ask you where are you? Just select your location and click Continue.

7. Choose the language and keyboard layout and click Continue. This language will be the standard language for the keyboard. You can change the keyboard language later also.

8. To create a user account, type your name, computer name, username and password then click Continue to begin the installation.

9. Do nothing, let the Ubuntu installation process will finish successfully. When the installation has completed, then click Restart Now to restart the virtual machine.

10. Now on the login page type the password and login to Ubuntu desktop virtual machine.

Finally, welcome to the Linux Ubuntu desktop as Hyper-v virtual machine in Windows 10.

There are many ways to transfer files between Hyper-v VM and Physical System. The simplest way is to Drag and Drop files in Hyper-v or Copy and Past to a VM. You can do this method with Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

How to Drag and Drop Files in Hyper-v?

From your Windows open the Hyper-v Manger and change the following settings.

1. From the Hyper-v Settings, select Enhanced Session Mode and tick the check box of Use enhanced session mode.

2. Do the same for Enhanced Session Mode Policy form Hyper-v Settings then click OK to apply changes. These settings are enabled by default in Windows 10, but in case of none enabled system you need to do it.

Enable Guest Services on Hyper-v Guest Machines

You need to enable guest services for Hyper-v guest system to perform copy and past while you are working.

1. Open the virtual machine settings and select the Integration Services then select the Guest Services and click OK to apply changes.

2. Run the Virtual machine and login it with enhanced session mode.

3. Now you should easily transfer files between two system. Try to copy and past some files form the physical machine to virtual machine.

You can even open or mount any local drive of physical system to virtual machine through enhanced session mode.

To open a local drive to a VM, when the system ask you on the display configuration page click

Select more options and select Local Resources tab. Now expand the Drivers and select the drivers you want to share with Virtual Machine.

Click OK and login to VM.
