When you create a file server, the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) is a must-have tool. You can use the FSRM to set limits for storage, classify files and folders, and control the types of file(s) you want to store on the file server. Moreover, the FSRM feature is not installed by default on Windows Server 2022 and the previous versions. You can install this feature manually using PowerShell or Server Manager. You will learn how to install the FSRM on Windows Server 2022. Additionally, you will learn how to restrict a folder by storage size and data type.

Install File Server Resource Manager on Windows Server 2022

There are two ways to install this feature on Windows Server 2022:

1. Install Using PowerShell

An easy and quick way to install the FSRM on Windows Server 2022 is using PowerShell.

Search the PowerShell in the Search box or open it from the Start Menu on Windows Server.

In the PowerShell window, write:
Install-WindowsFeature FS-Resource-Manager
and enter.

Install the FSRM Using PowerShell

It may take a few seconds to install. After the FSRM is installed, you can write the:
Get-WindowsFeature |More
to check whether it is installed successfully or not. If the installation was completed, you see the X sign in front of its name.

FSRM Installed

Configure File Server Resource Manager

When you open the File Server Resource Manager feature, there are five sub-features under it. You can use those sub-features according to the requirement. In this article, we discuss the most important of them: Quota Management and File Screening Management.

Quota Management

People use Quota Management to limit the space allowed for the volumes or folders and notify the admin or the user via email or other notifications. When you open the Quota Management, there are two other sub-container:

Quota: This container contains all the existing and upcoming quotas with details.

Quota template: it carries all the existing and ready templates.

How do create quotas?

Right-click on the Quota container and click on Create Quota.

In the Create Quota window, specify the folder path that you want to restrict. You can do it by browsing or writing the path of that folder.

Specify the Path of the Folder

3. In the same window, a question asking how do you want to configure quota properties? Beneath that question, there are two options.

If you check the “Drives properties from this quota template”, then open the drop-down menu. And select the limited space amount from the existing templates, and click Create.

Alternatively, if you check the second answer (Define custom quota properties), click on the Custom Properties button.
Due to the security issue, you may set a complex password on your system for the safety of your data. If you forget or lose passwords on Windows 11 or other previous versions, you can safely reset the password before logging into the system. Moreover, there are various ways (Third-party tools and built-in tools) to reset the password without losing the data. This article covers how to reset local user account passwords on Windows 11, through answering the security questions, password reset disk files, and resetting the password using CMD.

You can read this article if you are using windows 10: How to Reset Lost Windows 10 Password Correctly?

1: Reset Windows 11 password with security questions

If you added security questions while creating your local account for Windows 11, you can answer those questions again and sign in successfully. After entering the wrong password, you will see the “the password is incorrect. Try Again” notification. Then click ok, and go with the following steps:

Under the password box, you see the “Reset Password” link on the sign-in screen; click on that.

Click on Reset Password

Login with the new password without losing a single piece of data.

2: Reset forgotten password using password reset disk

Another way to reset the forgotten password on Windows 11 is through the password reset disk (It is a file you create on a USB flash drive and lets you safely reset the password later). This method is possible if you have already created a password reset disk on a USB flash drive. Since creating a password reset disk on Windows 11 and Windows 10 is the same, you can check this article Reset Windows 10 password with password reset USB for creating a password reset disk. After plugging in the USB flash drive or SD card that contains the password reset disk file, go ahead with the following steps to reset the local user account’s password.

After entering the wrong password, click on the Reset Password link in the sign-in window.

Scroll down to the end of the questions and their boxes, then click on the Use a password reset disk instead link.

Click on Password Reset Disk

Click next in the Password Reset Wizard. And the system automatically detects the USB Drive if you have inserted the USB already. After selecting the password reset disk from the top-down menu, click next.

Insert the Password Reset Disk

You are done with resetting the password using the password reset disk.

3: Reset password without using USB, or other software

The third way to reset the password on Windows 11 before login into the computer is through a command prompt. This method does not need you to create a password reset disk, or must-have answered the security questions. Before starting to reset the password, you need to do the following process to get access to the CMD window in the sign-in window:

In your sign-in window, press Shift-Key and restart your computer. This takes you to the Windows Recovery window. In the windows recovery, select Troubleshoot option.

Click Advanced Options > See more recovery options > System Image Recovery.

Now click on the Select a system image and click next.

Malware, short for malicious software, is an umbrella term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software, including computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, scareware, and other malicious programs. Malware is defined by its malicious intent, acting against the requirements of the computer user – and so does not include software that causes unintentional harm due to some deficiency.

Remove Malware from Windows 10

Protect and remove malware from Window 10 is easy by applying these simple steps. All Windows operating system infrastructures are the same. So you can apply this guide on all Windows not only Windows 10. It’s not too hard such as an advanced persistent threat. The (APT) is a network attack in which an unauthorized person gains access to a network and stays there undetected for a long period of time. The intention of an APT attack is to steal data rather than to cause damage to the network or organization. In such a case a network security specialist needs to solve the advanced persistent threat issue.

1. Check System Viruses Manually

The manual virus crawling and checking will get you expert in Windows operating system. The difference between scanning system with Antivirus software and checking manually is learning about Windows system monitoring tools inside Windows. The Windows performance monitoring tools are best Windows built-in tools that most Windows users are not aware of them.

To find and track a virus in Windows 10, read the article “Removing Virus from Laptop without Antivirus“. In this informative article, we find and track the behaviors of a virus in Windows operating system.

2. Antivirus software and Malware Protection Software

Although, Windows 10 has a built-in system protection software “Windows Defender” but currently it’s not good virus protection software. On our testing lab, Windows defender had been failed to detect most common malicious software and viruses. It even could not detect image.exe folder virus.

Remove Malware from Windows 10 with Malware Protection Software – Technig

So, it’s better to install a well-known antivirus software on your system and keep it updated with the latest version. We recommend you the topic of some best free antivirus software.

3. Windows System Care and PC Optimizer Software

A PC Optimizer is a collection of auto troubleshoot and optimizing tools which help make your PC clean, secure and work faster. It finds and fixes most common Windows errors and problems automatically without user engagement with built-in Windows troubleshooting tools.

The Windows Care Genius is one the PC optimizer tools that we are using on our network computers. To know more about the features and functions read the Windows Care Genius review article. We wrote completely about pros and cons, and 22 features.

But here we try to analyze, find and remove virus from Laptop without antivirus software. It shows how a virus tries to spread itself in a system where there is not installed antivirus and system protection software.

I begin from a simple folder “Image.exe” folder inside a pen-drive. When I attempt to open it, nothing happened. Yes, nothing happened, but it spread on your system.

Remove Virus from Laptop without Antivirus

Let’s trace the Image.exe files in a Windows 10 system manually without antivirus.

Note: It’s important to know that Windows defender is not recognized “image.exe” folder as a suspicious software. See the Windows defender result from below screenshot.

Windows Defender Security Scanning Results

So, Windows Defender is a useless Windows system protection software inside your computer. Any way to see the file extension you must configure your Windows Folder Options.

1. Search “File Explorer Option” in Windows and choose Show hidden files, folders, and drivers then un-check Hide empty drives, Hide extensions for known file types, Hide folder merge conflicts, and Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) from View tab.

Windows Folder Options – Show Windows Hidden Files

Now your system is ready to show all hidden files, folders and extensions of known file types.

2. Open task manager from the Task bar or typing “taskmgr” on Run. Then explore the processes tab of task manager to find the Image.exe running process.

Find Virus in Windows

You can find the other specious software as well. Here I just find the image.exe folder virus in my system.

3. Now, right click the image.exe (32 bit) to find the file location. Click the Open file location to see where the main virus file is located in your system?

How to Find Virus File Location In Windows

4. Yes, it shows the exact location of virus files. Now try to delete it the main virus file and follow the steps to clean the system from virus.

Virus File Location in Pen-Drive – Remove Virus from Laptop without Antivirus

5. You can not delete the main image.exe folder while the file is running on your system. Before deleting the file, you must stop or kill its process from Task Manager. To kill the process right click the image.exe (32 bit) and click End task. See the step 3 screenshot.

When you stop the process of virus from your system by killing the process, you must see the Windows Startup section for startup behavior of virus as well. On Task Manager, Startup tab checks what you can find something related to viruses or specious software.

6. The iconrdb.exe file on Startup tab is related to image.exe virus.

To enable Windows 10 developer mode, you make your Windows system a bit risky. If you are not a developer, so don’t enable Windows 10 developer mode just for testing none trusted outside Windows Store Apps and games.

The Windows 10 developer feature includes on any devices such as Windows 10 desktops, tablets and phones. You can enable a device for development, or just for sideloading.

Sideloading is installing and then running or testing an app that has not been certified and verified by Windows Store.

Developer mode let you sideload apps, and also run apps from Visual Studio in debug mode.

Note: If you sideload apps, you should still only install apps from trusted sources. When you install a sideloaded app that has not been certified by the Windows Store, you are agreeing that you have obtained all rights necessary to sideload the app and that you are solely responsible for any harm that results from installing and running the app. For privacy and policy, once see the Windows Store section of this privacy statement.

Enable Windows 10 Developer Mode

On your Windows 10 device that you want to enable developer mode, go to Settings. Choose Update & security, then choose For developers.

Choose the level of access that you need. For more detailed info about the options, see Which settings should I choose: sideload apps or developer mode?

Read the disclaimer for the setting you chose, then click Yes to accept the change.

Enable Windows 10 Developer Mode – Technig

For your Windows 10 mobile devices, navigate to the same Settings and find the Windows 10 developer mode from Mobile Settings.

Enable Windows 10 Developer Mode for Mobile Devices

The Windows 10 developer mode is mostly usable for Windows developers. But the Sideload apps feature is for installing apps and games without any Microsoft account. Without Sideload apps option, you must login to Microsoft Windows Store in order to install apps.

This option enables you to easily install third party apps in your Windows 10 mobile devices, but it make your device none secure.

Configure user account control behavior in Windows let you easily protect your system unknown behaviors. It helps prevent potentially harmful programs from making changes to your computer without any warring. If you don’t know about UAC and how it works, read the below short details from Technet.

What is User Account Control?

The User Account Control (UAC) is a security component that enables users to perform common tasks as non-administrators called standard users , and as administrators without having to switch users, log off, or use Run As Administrator.

User accounts that are members of the local Administrators group run most applications as a standard user. By separating user and administrator functions, UAC helps users move toward using standard user rights by default. When an administrator logs on to a computer that is running Windows 10, the user is assigned two separate access tokens. Access tokens, which contain a user’s group membership and authorization and access control data, are used by the Windows operating system to control what resources and tasks the user can access. Read more about UAC.

Configure User Account Control behavior in Windows 10

Let’s do to configure user account control behavior in your Windows 10 and make sure your system is pretty enough secure.

On the Windows search type “UAC” and open the User Account Control. The default setting is on Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer. This level is not notify you when you bring any changes to your system. Because all Windows default programs are familiar apps to Windows.

Configure User Account Control behavior in Windows 10

If you need to bring changes to UAC settings, simply bring down or up the options and fix it for your system. Never put the option on Never notify me when system trying to install software and make changes on my system. It’s the worst option for any system. Versus the Never notify me, Always notify me is annoying you when normally work on Windows.

The below lists are the notifications window and icons colors or UAC.

Blue background with a blue and gold shield icon: It notify when you run a Server administration tools to make any changes.

Red background with a red shield icon: The app is blocked with Group Policy or is blocked the app publisher. It happens for unknown software publishers.

Blue background with a blue shield icon: Notify for apps that trusted by local computer and signed by authenticated user.

Yellow background with a yellow shield icon: Notifies for non-trusted by local computer and unsigned apps.

These settings and configurations are just for a single computer. But how to configure UAC on a large network with more than ten brunches.

Configure User Account Control with Group Policy

On a local computer or Windows server you can configure UAC settings through group policy. On single computer you only apply the settings for your own computer and users, but on Windows server you can apply to all users and computers of the network.

Type “gpedit.msc” on Windows run to open group policy editor on Windows 10 or other Windows client. But for Windows server type “gpmc.msc” to open group policy manager console and create a GPO then edit and make changes.

Configure User Account Control with Group Policy

You can simply enable or disable the user account control. If you don’t know the basics of group policy manger or editor, read about group policy management.

Ask us, comment us and let us know your problems about User account control behavior on Windows server and Windows clients.
