You have installed a Linux on your virtualized lab but not work perfectly. After installing Linux on a VMware, you need to install VMware tools correctly to integrate virtual machine with the host system. VMware tools are a suite of utilities that enhance the performance of the virtual machines guest operating system and improves the management of the virtual machine. Without VMware Tools installed in your guest operating system, guest performance lacks important functionality.

Installing VMware Tools eliminates or improves these issues:

Low video resolution.

Inadequate colour depth.

Incorrect display of network speed.

Restricted movement of the mouse.

Inability to copy and paste and drag-and-drop files.

Missing sound.

Provides the ability to take quiesced snapshots of the guest OS.

Synchronizes the time in the guest operating system with the time on the host.

VMware Tools includes these components:

The VMware Tools service.

VMware device drivers.

The VMware user process.

VMware Tools control panel.

Read more about VMware Tools features and functionalities on overview of VMware tools.

Install VMware Tools Correctly on Ubuntu Linux

The steps to install VMware Tools vary depending on the VMware product and the guest operating system you have installed. In this post, we are going to install VMware tools correctly on Linux Ubuntu using VMware workstation. The host system is a Windows 10.

1. Right-click the Ubuntu virtual machine on VMware workstation then click Install VMware Tools to mount the VMware tools to DVD Rom.

Easy Install VMware Tools on Ubuntu Linux

2. Open the DVD on the Ubuntu sidebar and copy the VMware-tools-distrib from inside the VMwareTools***tar.gz compressed file to the desktop.

Install VMware tools Correctly on Ubuntu Linux

3. Now, run the terminal command line and navigate to VMware folder on the desktop. Type “cd Desktop” to go to the desktop directory, then type “ls” to see what you have on your desktop. The best way to share file between Ubuntu and Windows, you need to install and configure Samba as a file server in Ubuntu Linux. The Samba server will simply let you share files with Windows and Linux Ubuntu.

1. Installing Samba in Ubuntu

Samba is a free software re-implementation of the SMB/CIFS networking protocol. Samba provides file and print services for various Windows clients and can integrate with a Windows Server domain, either as a Domain Controller (DC) or as a domain member. So in this article, we are using in Per-to-Per network between Windows clients and Linux Ubuntu clients. If you don’t like reading then watch the video tutorials at the end of this post.

Remember; your Ubuntu machine must be connected to the internet. Because this apt-get install command will install software from Ubuntu online software repository.

2. Share File Between Ubuntu and Windows

Let’s do how to share a file in Ubuntu through file explorer? Open the File and create a folder in the Home directory. I have created Netdata folder and required to share it.

We hope this Share File between Ubuntu and Windows article helped you to share file between Ubuntu and Windows 10 easily like a pro-Linux user.

Troubleshoot File Sharing Between Ubuntu and Windows

The above article and video are a simple file sharing between Windows 10 and Linux Ubuntu. I didn’t assign a user to Samba file server on Linux. Because of this, a user on Technig Youtube channel asked a good question about sharing files and user permissions.

Asked by Ramsin Eivaz: question if I want a user and password, I assume I have to check only “allow others to create…” and not the guest access. But when I enter the Ubuntu user and password, it is not able to log in!! would you have any suggestions thanks.

Answer: You need to create a user account and add the user to the Sambashare group. Then when you access the folder from Windows clients, you should use that username and password for viewing the shared files and folders.

1. First, try to create a user in Ubuntu with “useradd” command or another command that help you create a user.

“sudo useradd -M -N -g sambashare Ali”

The -M parameter will not create a home directory for this user and the -N will not create a group with the same username. The -g parameter just specify the group name.

I have created the username “Ali” and added to “sambashare” group.

2. Let’s set a password for the Samba user with “smbpasswd” command.

“sudo smbpasswd -a Ali”
[sudo] password for shais:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:

3. Now from Windows 10, type this username and password to access the contents of a shared folder.

Finally, thanks for sharing the feedback, issues, and problems. Your comments help us to make articles better.

On this occasion, we thought it would be a very good idea to give you, guys, a little information on how to prepare for the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) released today. We’ll thus start with those who want to upgrade to the new version from an older one, such as Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or Ubuntu 15.10.

Download Linux Ubuntu 16.04

Ubuntu is distributed on two types of images described below.

Download Linux Ubuntu 16.04 – Desktop Image

The desktop image allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of image is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 384MiB of RAM to install from this image.

There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:

64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop image

Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the i386 images instead.

32-bit PC (i386) desktop image

For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure

Ubuntu 16.04 – New Features

Linux Kernel 4.4
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS ships with a modified version of Linux 4.4 kernel. It introduces numerable improvements to system stability, performance, power efficiency, and file system handling, and introduces support for newer Intel and AMD hardware.

Improved Intel Skylake processor support

3D support in the virtual GPU driver

New driver for Corsair Vengeance K90

Support for TPM 2.0 chips

Journaled RAID 5 support

If you decided to install Ubuntu Linux on Hyper-v in Windows 10, try to read the Install Ubuntu on Hyper-v article.

Remotely access from Windows to Windows is easy done with the Remote desktop protocol. But for two different operating system perform with many ways. In this post I have demonstrated to remote access Windows 10 via Ubuntu Linux and as well from Windows 10 to Ubuntu Linux using xRDP.

For connecting Windows 10 Windows try to read the below article.

Enable Remote Desktop on Windows 10 and Windows Server

The xRDP is an open-source remote desktop protocol (RDP) server using by Linux operating systems.

How to Remote Access Windows 10 via Ubuntu Linux?

The process you need to apply for remote desktop configuration from Windows 10 to Linux Ubuntu and from Linux Ubtun to Windows 10.

2. Let the xRDP installation process will be finished successfully. When it complete, try to install xfce4 with the “sudo apt-get install xfce4” command.

Install xfce4 on Ubuntu Linux

“sudo nano /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh”

Edite xRDP Startup File

5. On the editor add the startxfce4 at the end of the code and press Ctrl+O to save it. When it’s done, once restart the xRDP service with “sudo service xrdp restart” command.

6. From Windows 10, type “mstsc” on run and press enter to open remote desktop protocol. Then type the IP address of Ubuntu Linux and click Connect.

Connect Remotely to Ubuntu Linux

Finally, type user name and password of Ubuntu Linux to connect it remotely from Windows 10…

This is just a simple way to connect remotely from Windows 10 to Linux and Linux to Windows 10. There is more option that helps you do the remote desktop easily. But I have tested this on xRDP and Windows 10 remote desktop.

If you have any question, just let us know from the comment section.

Network Ubuntu and Windows 10 at your home and use them side by side. Both can comply with the standard user’s needs. I like to work with Linux and Windows at the same time and maybe you are. The popularity of Windows is more than Linux among home users operating systems. But nowadays the Linux desktops are also get popularized for end users. Especially my favourite Linux Ubuntu Desktop.

In this article, I’m going to simply create and network Ubuntu and Windows 10. However, we wrote about how to share files between Ubuntu and Windows 10. So get ready to create a network using Windows 10 and Ubuntu desktop.

For Linux users, who don’t know the Windows 10 installation, read the bellow article, as well as Windows users that have problem with Ubuntu installation on their system.

How to Install Ubuntu Desktop?

How to Install Windows?

To dual boot two operating systems, read the install dual boot Linux and Windows article.

Network Ubuntu and Windows 10

Before sharing files and printer between Windows and Ubuntu, you must configure the IP address and permission on Windows and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Network Configuration

Let’s configure Ubuntu IP address and hostname to connect and reachable through Windows 10.

1. Login to your Ubuntu system. On the desktop click the Gear button to open System Settings.

Ubuntu System Settings

2. On the System Settings page select Network under Hardware.

Get IP address from DHCP

The network card has assigned an IP address by DHCP server from Wireless router. If there is not any DHCP server on the network, click Options to assign an IP address manually.

Note: To assign an IP address manually, click Options on network page to open Editing Wired connection window. Now select IPv4 Settings tab and select Manual under Method then click Add button then type the IP address, Netmask and Gateway and click Save to apply the changes.

Assign Manual IP Address for Ubuntu To Network Ubuntu and Windows 10

3. Close the pages and run the Terminal to check the IP configuration and hostname. On the Terminal type “hostname” to display system name and type “ifconfig” to display network configuration.

Ubuntu IP address and Hostname

Everything is good. Now try to configure Windows 10 network.

Windows 10 Network Configuration

Do the same settings for Windows 10 also. Set IP address, check hostname and enable network discovery.

1. On Windows 10 press Windows+R to open run. Now type “ncpa.cpl” to open Network Connections. On the network connections right-click the Ethernet and select Properties.

Configure Windows 10 Network

2. On the Ethernet Properties page, set the IP address manually like the below screenshot if you don’t have a DHCP server. So the Wireless router assigns an IP address for my systems.

Windows 10 Network Configuration

3. Open a command prompt to check the Windows 10 IP address and hostname. On the CMD type “hostname” and “ipconfig” to display the IP address and computer name.

Windows 10 IP Configuration

4. Open Network and Sharing Center from Control Panel. Select Change Advanced sharing settings from the left side of the network and sharing centre.

5. On Advanced sharing settings, expand All Networks and turn on public file sharing and disable password protection option then click Save Changes.

Windows 10 Change Advanced Sharing Settings

6. Finally, close the window and test the connectivity by pinging to the Ubuntu system.

Ping Command

Yes, then ping reply successfully. Now the Ubuntu and Windows 10 are connected on the same network. You can share files and printer between these two systems.
