The Remote Desktop allows a computer to access another computer through the local area network (LAN) or the internet. This software is pre-installed on the latest windows, but you have to enable it. There are many different ways to enable and configure remote desktop in windows 11.

Enable Remote Desktop in Windows 11 through Settings

To connect from one computer to another computer remotely, you have to enable the Remote Desktop on the target computer. Then connect the local management computer to the target computer. The target computer is the computer that you want to be managed, and the local management computer is the computer that connects to the target computer remotely and manages it.

To enable remote desktop go to Settings, System, and click on Remote Desktop.

When you get to the Remote Desktop window in Windows 11, basic settings have to know to configure well.

1. Remote Desktop on-off button; you can switch On to enable remote desktop and Off to disable it.
2. Require devices to use Network Level Authentication to connect (Recommended): it allows only the authenticated users (members of the Remote Desktop Users group) to connect. To enable this feature, checkmark the box for this feature.
3. Remote Desktop port: the port that the remote desktop use to make a connection between devices is port number 3389
4. PC name: you can use a computer’s PC name or IP address to connect to it remotely.
5. Remote Desktop users: choose who can remotely access this PC, click on it and add the users and groups. I will explain how to add users and groups to the Remote Desktop Users group in more detail.

If the operating system you are using is not Windows 11, enable remote desktop through system properties. Enable remote desktop through system properties is the typical way in all windows. Now that you have enabled the remote in windows 11, you can scroll down to configure the Remote Desktop Users group.

Enable Remote Desktop through System Properties

There are different ways to enable and configure Remote Desktop, but allowing that from System Properties is expected in the latest windows. Enabling Remote Desktop from System Properties is the same in Windows 7 and later. Follow the steps below to access System Properties, and configure the remote desktop through System Properties.

• Go to Settings, scroll down, click on About, and then click on Advanced System Settings. Or Type the sysdm.cpl command in the Run.

• Click on Remote, and select Allow remote connections to this computer. If you want to allow specific users to connect remotely, select Allow connections only from Remote Desktop computers with Network Level Authentication (recommended). Then click on Select Users to specify users. Once the users have been added, click OK.

From the Settings and System properties, you can specify which users or groups can access this computer remotely. Below I have explained how to add users and groups to the Remote Desktop Users group.

Add users and groups to the Remote Desktop Users group.

A more common way to add users and groups to another group is through group policy in Computer Management. But you can add users and groups to the Remote Desktop Users group from Remote Desktop settings or System Properties. Since I have explained enabling remote desktop through windows settings and System Properties, just one click on Select Users can get you to the screen below. Follow the steps below to add users and groups to the Remote Desktop Users group.

• Click Add to add users and groups to the Remote Desktop Users group.

• Click on Find Now, list of users and groups will appear. Select a user or a group, then click OK.

• Add the users and groups you want to have remote access then click OK.

• A list of the users added to the Remote Desktop Users group shows up here. To remove users from the Remote Desktop Users group, select user and click on remove. Click OK to apply the changes.

You can configure all the users on your computer to have remote access or configure specific users to have remote access. It is better to specify the user you allow to have remote access for security reasons.

Connect to a Machine using Remote Desktop

Now that you enabled remote desktop on the target computer. Follow the steps below to connect the local management computer to the target computer remotely.

• Run the command mstsc in the local management computer.

• In the Remote Desktop Connection, type the IP address or name of the target computer.

• When the screen below appears, enter a user’s credential that is a member of the Remote Desktop Users group. Type the username and password, then click OK.

Most of the configurations happen in the target to make a remote connection. In the local management computer (the computer you want to use for remote connection), open the Remote Desktop Connection, type the IP address of the target computer, and then log in with an authorised user. Enable remote desktop in the target computer (the computer you want to manage) and add users to the Remote Desktop Users group.

Set up Remote Assistance Connection in Windows 11, allows you to share your computer screen with another person on the local network or the internet. You can get help from another person to perform a specific task or troubleshoot your computer. You can also assign remote control to another person over the LAN or internet so he can configure your computer.

Enable Remote Assistance in Windows 11

To enable Remote Assistance in Windows 11, go to windows settings, System, About, then click on Advanced system settings. Or type the command sysdm.cpl in the Run, System Properties show will show up. On System Properties, click on the Remote tab, click on Allow Remote Assistance Connections to This Computer, then click OK.

Set up a Remote Assistance Connection

• Search for Remote Assistance in the start menu and click on Invite Someone to Connect to Your PC And Help You. Or search for Run in the start menu, type the command msra in Run, then click OK.

• Click on Invite someone you trust to help you and ask someone else to help you. If you want to help someone else, then click on Help Someone Who Has Invited You.

• Click on Save this invitation as a file to save the invitation on your computer. Later you can send the invitation through email or any other social media platform.

• Save the invitation password in a notepad file, then send the invitation file and password to the helper. Do not close the Remote Assistance window because it is Waiting For Incoming Connection.

• Open the invitation file on the helper computer, type the password and click OK.

• Click on the Fit Screen to have a better GUI. Click on the Request Control to have remote control access. By default, the helper computer has only monitoring access.

• When the helper computer request remote control, the following screen shows up. Allow the helper computer to have remote control of your computer by clicking on Yes.

Remote assistance is an excellent tool for the computer tech to troubleshoot computers over the Internet. It provides technicians with the ability to have control over clients’ computers. When you give the helper computer full access, that computer can install, uninstall, run, and troubleshoot applications on your computer.

The Windows Remote desktop can be enable with the command line such as CMD and Powershell. Here we enable remote desktop using command prompt in Windows 10. You can use this method on all Microsoft Windows server and Workstation systems.

In Microsoft Windows operating systems, you can connect to a computer running Windows from another computer running Windows that’s connected to the same network or the Internet. For example, you can use all of your work computer’s programs, files, and network resources from your home computer, and it’s just like you’re sitting in front of your computer at work.

To connect to a remote computer, that computer must be turned on; it must have a network connection, Remote Desktop must be enabled. You must have network access to the remote computer (this could be through the Internet), and you must have permission to connect. For permission to connect, you must be on the list of remote desktop users. Before you start a connection, it’s a good idea to look up the name of the computer you’re connecting to and to make sure Remote Desktop connections are allowed through its firewall.

Enable Remote Desktop using Command Line

To enable remote desktop using command line, you must have administrator permission in Windows. The command line interfaces, command prompt or Powershell, must run as administrator.

Enable remote desktop process:

1. Run Windows Command Prompt.
2. Execute registry command to enable remote desktop.
3. Enable Remote Desktop on system Firewall.
4. Test Remote Desktop Connectivity between two systems.

Let’s run the command prompt as administrator and follow the article to enable remote desktop with command line.

1. Type the below command to enable remote desktop.

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server" /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

The result must be the same as above screenshot. If you face any issue while running command, check the command structure and try again.

2. To disable remote desktop, just type the below command and run it.

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server" /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

3. Allow the Remote desktop on your Windows firewall system with netsh command.

netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="remote desktop" new enable=yes

4. Now, you need to add a user account to remote desktop users group. To do this using the “net localgroup” command.

net localgroup "remote desktop users" Shais /add

The username “Shais” has been added successfully to “Remote Desktop Users” group. You can test the remote desktop user members with below command.

net user Shais

That’s all you need to enable remote desktop using command line on any Windows operating systems.

Enable Remote Desktop Connection with GUI

To allow remote connections on the computer, you want to connect to:

1. Open System by clicking the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click Remote settings.If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Under Remote Desktop, select one of the three options.
3. Click Select Users.If you’re an administrator on the computer, your current user account will automatically be added to the list of remote users, and you can skip the next two steps.
4. In the Remote Desktop Users dialog box, click Add.
5. In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, do the following:
   1. To specify the search location, click Locations, and then select the location you want to search.
   2. In entering the object names to select, type the name of the user that you want to add, and then click OK.
   3. The name will be displayed in the list of users in the Remote Desktop Users dialog box. Click OK, and then click OK again.

To look up the computer name of the remote computer:

1. On the remote computer, open System by clicking the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, you can find your computer name, and it’s full computer name if your computer is on a domain.

To allow Remote Desktop connections through a Windows Firewall:

If you’re having trouble connecting, Remote Desktop connections might be getting blocked by the firewall. Here’s how to change that setting on a Windows PC. If you’re using another firewall, make sure the port for Remote Desktop (usually 3389) is open.

1. On the remote computer, click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Click System and Security.
3. Then click Allow a program through Windows Firewall under Windows Firewall.
4. And click Change settings and then check the box next to Remote Desktop.
5. Click OK to save the changes.

To set a password for your user account

Your user account must have a password before you can use Remote Desktop to connect to another computer.

1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Double-click User Accounts.
3. Select Change your Windows Password under User Accounts.
4. Click Create a password for your account and follow the instructions on the screen.

To start Remote Desktop on the computer, you want to work from:

1. Open Remote Desktop Connection by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Remote Desktop Connection, and then, in the list of results, click Remote Desktop Connection.
2. In the Computer box, type the name of the computer that you want to connect to, and then click Connect. (You can also type the IP address instead of the computer name.)

    4. Clear the check boxes for any tools that you want to turn off. Note that if you turn off Server Manager, the computer must be restarted, and tools that were accessible from the Tools menu of Server Manager must be opened from the Administrative Tools folder.
    5. When you are finished turning off tools that you do not want to use, click OK.

To uninstall Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 10

I’m installing a PHP web application on a Linux cloud VPS. It needs MySQL database and Username granted access to the database. So in this short step by step guide, you will learn how to create MySQL database on a Linux VPS or any dedicated server.

The process is easy, just need to know some SQL server query structure. This article works on Linux and Windows. The MySQL server command line structure is the same on Linux operating systems and Windows systems.

How to Create MySQL Database?

Before you going to create MySQL database, you must log in to your VPS server via SSH, Telnet or even connect to VPS via remote desktop graphically.

When you connected to your VPS Server or dedicated server, type the following command to create a database inside MySQL Server.

1. Connect to VPS using PuTTY with SSH and connect to MySQL Server with the command “mysql -p” command then enter the password.

2. Check the currently available databases in MySQL server with “show databases;” command.

Note: The information_schema, MySQL, performance_schema and PHPMyAdmin databases are the built-in.

3. Now type “create database TechnigDB;” then press enter to create the database named “TechnigDB“. See the result with previous show databases command.

Note: Type you own database name instead of “TechnigDB“. Also, name the databases related to your projects name.

The database in MySQL server created successfully. Now you need to setup a user for connecting to this database with full permission. When you install some PHP script or web applications, you must have a database and username.

How to Create User in MySQL server?

Like creating a database in MySQL, a user is also created with “create” command line. Try the following command to create a user name and give full access to the database.

1. Create database with “create user ‘Shams’@’localhost’ identified by ‘UserPassWordHere’;“. This command will create a user named “Shams” with password “UserPassWordHere”.

2. Set the “Shams” user to “TechnigDB” database which created previously with “grant all privileges on TechnigDB.* to ‘Shams’@’localhost’;” command.

3. Finally, once reload the MySQL users privileges to refresh the permissions with “flush privileges;” command.

Remote desktop protocol (RDP) provides a user to connect to another computer over the network connection. In Windows operating system the RDP is disable by default. If you want to use it you must enable and give permission to appropriate user or group. It’s all about controlling a Server remotely over internet or private network.

How to Enable and Configure Remote Desktop Protocol?

Step 1:  To enable remote desktop in Windows Server press Windows+R button to open run and type sysdm.cpl and hit enter.  Sysdm.cpl is the shortcut of system properties. In this article the Server is Windows Server 2008 R2 with a Windows 10 client.

When the System properties opened click Remote tab and choose “Allow connection from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure). It works and compatible with all versions of Windows but if you don’t have any old version, select “Allow connection only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure) and click OK the message page. 

Now add a user to remote desktop group. By default administrator has permission but you can add a new user. To add a user click Select Users, in the Remote desktop Users click Add button and type the user name you want to be a Remote controller user of Windows Server. When complete click Check name for accuracy of user name, then click Ok and click Ok to close all open pages.

Step 2:  Go to windows client and press Windows+R to open Run and type mstsc in order to open Remote Desktop Connection.

Now type the IP address of Windows Server and click Connect.

Now System ask for authentication, you must enter user name and password. Type the user name and password then click OK.

Here on the identity message click Yes.

Now you are successfully connected to Windows Server 2008 R2 with Remote Desktop.

How to Remote Access Windows 10 via Ubuntu Linux?

The process you need to apply for remote desktop configuration from Windows 10 to Linux Ubuntu and from Linux Ubtun to Windows 10.

1. Enable remote desktop in Windows 10.
2. Configure remote desktop Firewall extension.
3. Connect remotely from Windows 10 to Ubuntu.
4. Install xRDP on Ubuntu Linux for remote desktop
5. Configure Linux remote desktop.
6. Connect remotely from Linux Ubuntu to Windows 10

Try to enable remote desktop on Windows 10 using the above article and allow it from Windows firewall for the public network.

The Remote desktop on my Windows 10 is enabled and ready to use. The firewall is also allowing it to access the RDP from outside.

1. From Linux Ubuntu press Windows key and search “Remote Desktop” to find and open the Remmina Remote Desktop Client.

2. Enter the IP address of Windows 10 and click Connect. When prompt you about accepting the certificate, click OK. 

3. Type the Windows 10 user name and password then click OK to connect to Windows 10 remotely. Type the user name and password currently, otherwise it will not connect you remotely to Windows 10.

Finally, you have connected to Windows 10 via Linux Ubuntu successfully. Now you can do anything remotely on Windows. From installing, deleting software to make changes and configuring Windows 10 remotely.

OK. We have done the remote access Windows 10 via Ubuntu Linux. Let’s connect remotely from Windows 10 to Ubuntu Linux.

Connect Remotely Ubuntu via Windows 10

First of all try to install xRDP on Linux Ubuntu. Before installing xRDP packages try to update the Ubuntu with “apt-get update” command.

1. While you are login on Ubuntu Linux, press Ctrl+Alt+t to open the Linux Terminal and type “sudo apt-get install xrdp” then press enter. Do it like the below screenshot.

2. Let the xRDP installation process will be finished successfully. When it complete, try to install xfce4 with the “sudo apt-get install xfce4” command.

3. We need to modify the xRDP startup file to make it start automatically. Before editing xRDP startup file, try to create .xsession file in the home directory with below command.

echo xfce4-session >~/.xsession

4. Now the second file we need to edit is the startup file for xRDP, so it will start xfce4 service on startup.

“sudo nano /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh”

5. On the editor add the startxfce4 at the end of the code and press Ctrl+O to save it. When it’s done, once restart the xRDP service with “sudo service xrdp restart” command.

6. From Windows 10, type “mstsc” on run and press enter to open remote desktop protocol. Then type the IP address of Ubuntu Linux and click Connect.

Finally, type user name and password of Ubuntu Linux to connect it remotely from Windows 10…

This is just a simple way to connect remotely from Windows 10 to Linux and Linux to Windows 10. There is more option that helps you do the remote desktop easily. But I have tested this on xRDP and Windows 10 remote desktop.

Configure Windows Remote Assistance

To configure remote assistance in Windows 10, simply type “Sysdm.cpl” on the Windows Run then press enter to open the system properties.

Now on the System Properties select Remote tab and check the RA to enable it. Then click OK to applying the changes. In Windows, by default, the RA is enabled and need to be the firewall of RA.

In order to enable RA to communicate through the network, go to control, Windows Firewall, click “Allow an app or feature through firewall“.

Now click Change settings then select Remote Assistance and select both Private and Public.

So the remote assistance has been enabled successfully. Now try to send an invitation to a trusted person or technical support person to help you.

1. Go to Control Panel, System and Security, under System click Lunch remote assistance or type “msra” to the run. Both work the same but the command is short and easy.

2. On the Windows Remote Assistance page click Invite someone you trust to help you.

3. Click Save this invitation as a file. I have saved this file to a network shared folder.

4. Send this password for the trusted person with invitation file…

OK, the configuration has finished on Windows 10. Now try to connect to this PC from technical PC.

Go to technical PC and open the invitation file from the shared folder.

You see the Invitation file and saved password to a text file. Click to open the invitation and enter the password to connect to Windows 10.

Now on Windows 10, you have received a message. Just click Yes to allow technical PC to connect to your PC.

Finally, you are connected to Windows 10. You can control the Windows 10 remotely.

IMPORTANT: You can install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8.1 only on Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and you must be running a full release of Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 Enterprise; it cannot be a prerelease or evaluation copy.

• Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins and consoles
• Windows PowerShell cmdlets and providers
• Command-line tools for managing roles and features
• IP Address Management console
• Hyper-V tools

Install and Configure RSAT In Windows 8.1

You need to download the RSAT the link ‘Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8.1‘ from Microsoft website. RSAT has two files, the “Windows8.1-KB2693643-x64.msu” is for x64 bit Windows and the “Windows8.1-KB2693643-x86.msu” is for 32 bit.

Check your Windows architecture from computer properties.

When the download completed, try to install it on Windows client using local admin or domain admin. So click Yes when ask you ‘Do you want to install the Windows software update? ‘

On the Read these licence term page click I Accept and let the RSAT being install on the system.

It will take a few minutes to complete.

When the installation has finished click Close to close the page. Now go to control panel and open the Administrative Tools or press Windows button and search for Administrative Tools.

Here are all tools are enabled by default in this version of RSAT.

To test the RSAT, open Active Directory Users and Computers.

You can create your own custom Microsoft Management Console MMC.

Remember, if you want to manage and server using RSAT you must login as domain admin on Windows 8.1 client.
