Upload a Folder to Google Drive

Step 1. To upload a Folder to Google Drive, sign in to your account and select new from the left corner.

Step 2. Now you have to select Upload Folder, Then browse for the folder and select that. In this case, I will select a Folder containing two PDF Files by the name of Drive Upload.

Step 3. When the upload completes, you can see the Folder is uploaded there.

Sharing File Securely with Others

In order to share a file with others, first, you have to upload to Google Drive, then follow these Procedures?

Step 1. Right-click on the file which you want to share and select share.

Step 2. Now you are in the basic window where you can share the file with others by entering the email address of them. When you enter the Email address you have to verify the permission for him/her. There are three permissions of Edit, Comment, and View.

Note: Once you have entered the email address or email addresses, you can also add some notes about the thing which you are sending to them. In below screenshot, I have inserted two email address and a small note.

Share Files with Others Using Advanced Feature

You have gotten how to share files with others using the Basic Mode, but there is also an Advanced Mode of sharing files with others. Follow the below Procedures to access the Advanced Mode.

Step 1. Select a File or files, then right-click and select share. When you are in the basic sharing mode, under the Edit Files, there is a button called Advanced. When you find that click on it for further steps.

Step 2. When you accessed the Advanced Mode, It is divided into three sections:

1. Who has access?
2. Inviting People.
3. Applying settings.

1. Who has access?

You have the right whether you are going to share it in private, Public or anyone mode. You can edit the mode by selecting Change under the who has access?

Now you are in the Link sharing Page where you can specify the sharing mode. There are three options:

• Public: When you select it, it will be shared publicly on the web where anyone can access it.
• Anyone: When you select it, it will be shared with those who have the link.
• Private: When you select it, it will be shared with specified people.

Note: For Public and Anyone Mode, there is not required any login to download the file, but for the private mode it needs to be logged in.

Note: if you select Public or Anyone then you have rights to access the permission for them such as view, edit, and comment. When you are with the settings click save and go on.

2. Inviting People

When you specified the sharing mode, at the same time you have the ability to invite specific people when the file has been shared. It won’t matter whether it is in Public, anyone and private sharing model.

When you inserted the email addresses, there is also a box for notifying people, then check it to notify them. Not only that you can also add a message to them. just select add a message and go on.

3. Applying settings

For settings, there are only two settings available:

• Preventing editors from bringing changes to the file.
• Disabling the download option.

I recommend you to use the preventing editors in the public and anyone mode. When you are done, click save changes and click send to share it on the web. when it shared you can see who has access to it.

What is Get shareable link?

Get shareable link is a link which creates a link to Share Files with Google Drive for people on the web ( It is in the public mode ). It gives you a link, if you paste it on the web you can see the document. But how to get this link?

Step 1. Right-click on the file and select Get shareable link.

Share File Between Windows and Linux

Before access Windows shared folder from Linux, once check the Windows 10 network discovery is enabled, the shared folder must share correctly with share and NTFS permission. See the screenshot of sharing a folder in Windows 10.

1. Create a folder and right-click the folder then click Properties.

Install Samba Linux File Sharing Service

Now, let’s access Windows shared folder from Linux Ubuntu. Before accessing the shared folder from Linux, you must have installed the Sharing Services on your Linux system. If you didn’t, the system would ask you to install sharing services when you attempt to share a folder on Linux.

On the Linux Ubuntu prompt that the sharing service has not installed. You need to install the Windows networks sharing service to share your folders. So click Install service and continue to finalize the sharing services installation.

You should be able to mount the shared folder by using the GUI in Linux, but it’s also very easy to do with the command line. We’re going to use the terminal for accessing shared files quicker.

First, you’ll need the cifs-utils package to mount SMB shares. Just type the “sudo apt-get install cifs-utils” command at the terminal to install cifs-utils package.

After installing cifs-utils package, try to create a folder and mount the Windows SMB share folder with. To create a folder type “mkdir ~/Desktop/WinFiles” command.

To mount the Windows shared folder type “sudo mount.cifs //Technig-Win10/SharedFiles /home/ulx/Desktop/WinFiles/ -o user=Win10” command.

• sudo mount.cifs: This is just the mount command, set to mount a CIFS (SMB) share.
• Technig-Win10: Is the name of the Windows computer. Type “hostname” on CMD to find your Windows computer name.

• /home/ulx/Desktop/WinFiles: Is where we’d like the share files to be mounted on the Linux system.
• -o user=Win10: Is the Windows username that we are using to access the shared folder. Type “net user” in CMD to find the user name of Windows.

Now, open the WinFiles to see the shared files inside. These are the shared files from Windows 10.

In a network where you have Windows and Linux Ubuntu operating system, it is a bit difficult to share file between Ubuntu and Windows. The best way to share file between Ubuntu and Windows, you need to install and configure Samba as a file server in Ubuntu Linux. The Samba server will simply let you share files with Windows and Linux Ubuntu.

1. Installing Samba in Ubuntu

Samba is a free software re-implementation of the SMB/CIFS networking protocol. Samba provides file and print services for various Windows clients and can integrate with a Windows Server domain, either as a Domain Controller (DC) or as a domain member. 1. To install Samba file server in Ubuntu Linux, run the terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T keys to open Linux terminal command-line interface.
2. Now type the “sudo apt-get install Samba” to install Samba file server. Type the password to start the installation.

Remember; your Ubuntu machine must be connected to the internet. Because this apt-get install command will install software from Ubuntu online software repository.

2. Share File Between Ubuntu and Windows

Let’s do how to share a file in Ubuntu through file explorer? Open the File and create a folder in the Home directory. I have created Netdata folder and required to share it.

1. Right-click the Netdata folder and click Local Network Share. Select Share this folder.

To allow modification to files and folder for users, select Allow others to create and delete files in this folder. Also, select Guest access (for people without a user account) to access files from Windows without requiring user and password.

2. Click Add the Permissions automatically to apply the permission to the shared folder.

If you want to set a password for a shared folder, you shout set a user for Samba file server with “sudo smbpasswd -a Shais” command then type the password twice.

Now it asks your user and password when someone wants to access the shared folders. The file-sharing from Ubuntu Linux has completed successfully. Let’s test it from Windows 10 client.

3. Access Shared Folders from Windows 10

You can access the Linux shared folders from Windows 10 using Network section. To simply access the shared folders type the \\IP address\Shared folders.

1. In Windows 10 type \\192.168.0.104\NetData and press enter to open the shared files of Linux Ubuntu.

2. When prompt for network credential, type the user name and password. If you did not set a password for Samba files server, it would not ask the network credentials.

3. It’s all the contents of a shared folder. You can create and delete files or edit the files.

To access the shared files quickly, create a shortcut link to a shared folder in Windows 10.

Right-click on the desktop and click New then click Shortcut.

Type the network address of shared folder in Type the location of the item: and click Next.

Type a name for shortcut related to the contents of the shared folder and click Finish to create the shortcut.

The above article and video are a simple file sharing between Windows 10 and Linux Ubuntu. I didn’t assign a user to Samba file server on Linux. Because of this, a user on Technig Youtube channel asked a good question about sharing files and user permissions.

Asked by Ramsin Eivaz: question if I want a user and password, I assume I have to check only “allow others to create…” and not the guest access. But when I enter the Ubuntu user and password, it is not able to log in!! would you have any suggestions thanks.

Answer: You need to create a user account and add the user to the Sambashare group. Then when you access the folder from Windows clients, you should use that username and password for viewing the shared files and folders.

1. First, try to create a user in Ubuntu with “useradd” command or another command that help you create a user.

The -M parameter will not create a home directory for this user and the -N will not create a group with the same username. The -g parameter just specify the group name.

I have created the username “Ali” and added to “sambashare” group.

2. Let’s set a password for the Samba user with “smbpasswd” command.

3. Now from Windows 10, type this username and password to access the contents of a shared folder.
