<p>You set the password on your computer to protect your privacy and ensure the safety of your data. However, it might get redundant to enter the password each time you sign in to your computer. You can find numerous articles written about turning off the lock screen password on your computer on google. I checked them, and some may not work on your computer. In the following article, you will learn easy and tested ways to remove (disable) a login password on Windows 11.</p>

<p>Read about: <a href="https://www.technig.com/reset-windows-11-password-from-command-prompt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Reset Windows 11 Password from Command Prompt</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Remove the login password from the registry.</strong></h2>

<p>Working with the registry is a critical process and requires taking extra caution. You can disable the Microsoft account password or local user password with the registry. To disable the login password from the registry, follow the steps below:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list" type="1"><li>Press the <strong>Windows + R</strong> button to open the run box.</li></ol>

<p>If you are signing into your computer with a local account, removing the password is more effortless. One easy way to remove the local account password is through the CMD.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list" type="1"><li>Open the command prompt as administrator.</li><li>Write the <strong><code>net user</code></strong> and enter; see the list of all user accounts on your computer.</li><li>Now write <strong><code>net user username *</code></strong> and enter. (they should be blank)</li><li>Do not write anything in the confirmation password, and press enter.</li></ol>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<p>You may forget or lose the password you set for your local account on Windows 11 and want to reset it. There are various ways to reset the password on Windows 11 before login in, and the most accessible and most convenient of them is through Command Prompt. This article covers all the required steps to reset <a href="https://technig.com/download-windows-11-iso-file/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Windows 11</a> passwords from Command Prompt (CMD).</p>

<p>You can check the Reset Windows 11 Password before login in for other methods to reset the password on Windows 11.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to reset Windows 11 Password using Command Prompt</strong></h2>

<p>Command Prompt is a secure and easy way to <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-or-reset-your-windows-password-8271d17c-9f9e-443f-835a-8318c8f68b9c" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">reset the local account password</a> before logging into your computer. After turning on your computer and the password was incorrect, follow the steps below to reset or change the password.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Sign-in-Window-1024x577.png" alt="Reset Windows 11 Password from Command Prompt" class="wp-image-17837" width="768" height="433" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Sign-in-Window-1024x577.png 1024w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Sign-in-Window-300x169.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Sign-in-Window-768x433.png 768w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Sign-in-Window.png 1356w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Sign-In Window</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>At first, you have to have access to the CMD (Command Prompt) in the sign-in window. You must rename the <strong>utilman.exe</strong>, and <strong>CMD.exe</strong> in Drive C to access the command prompt.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>To rename those two files in drive C, press the <b>Shift key</b> and restart your computer. You will be directed to the Windows Recovery page.</li><li>In the windows recovery, choose <strong>Troubleshoot</strong> option.</li><li>Select the <strong>Advanced options</strong> > <strong>Command Prompt.</strong></li></ol>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Command-Prompt-1-1024x644.png" alt="Reset Windows 11 Password from Command Prompt" class="wp-image-17838" width="768" height="483" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Command-Prompt-1-1024x644.png 1024w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Command-Prompt-1-300x189.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Command-Prompt-1-768x483.png 768w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Command-Prompt-1.png 1524w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption><br>Click on Command Prompt</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>4. Now that you have access to the CMD, you need to go to the C drive directory. Write <strong><code>C:</code> </strong>and enter. Additionally, you can write <code><strong>dir</strong> </code>and enter to see a list of all the main folders and files in the C drive.</p>

<p>5. To change the directory and go to the Windows folder in the C drive: write <strong><code>cd windows</code></strong> and enter. And then write <strong><code>cd system32</code></strong> and enter. You are now in these directories: <strong><code>C:\Windows\System32></code></strong></p>

<p>6. It is time to rename the utilman.exe file: to do so, write <strong><code>ren utilman.exe utilman1.exe </code></strong>and enter. The utilman file changed to utilman1. (The utilman1 is an arbitrary name, you can name it anything)</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<p>7. Moreover, now let’s rename the CMD.exe: to do so, write <strong><code>ren CMD.exe utilman1.exe</code></strong> and enter. You changed the name of CMD to the utilman. (The new name must be utilman)</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Reset the Password from Command Prompt</strong></h3>

<p>8. After renaming the two files, return to the sign-in window and click on the <strong>Accessibility</strong> icon in the bottom right corner, and the CMD window shows up. (If you still do not have access to the cmd window, restart your computer)</p>

<p>Finally, sign in with the new password, and you are done!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Conclusion</strong></h3>

<p>Due to the security issue, you may set a complex password on your system for the safety of your data. If you forget or lose passwords on Windows 11 or other previous versions, you can safely reset the password before logging into the system. Moreover, there are various ways (Third-party tools and built-in tools) to reset the password without losing the data. This article covers how to <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-or-reset-your-windows-password-8271d17c-9f9e-443f-835a-8318c8f68b9c" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">reset local user account passwords on Windows 11</a>, through answering the <strong>security questions</strong>, <strong>password reset disk</strong> files, and resetting the password using <strong>CMD</strong>.</p>

<p>You can read this article if you are using windows 10: <a href="https://technig.com/reset-lost-windows-10-password-fast-correctly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">How to Reset L</a><a href="https://technig.com/reset-lost-windows-10-password-fast-correctly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ost Windows 10 Password Correctly?</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1: Reset Windows 11 password with security questions</strong></h2>

<p>If you added security questions while creating your local account for Windows 11, you can answer those questions again and sign in successfully. After entering the wrong password, you will see the “<strong>the password is incorrect. Try Again</strong>” notification. Then click ok, and go with the following steps:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Under the password box, you see the “<strong>Reset Password</strong>” link on the sign-in screen; click on that.</li></ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Reset-Password-1-1024x643.png" alt="How to Reset Password on Windows 11 before Login" class="wp-image-17782" width="768" height="482" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Reset-Password-1-1024x643.png 1024w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Reset-Password-1-300x188.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Reset-Password-1-768x482.png 768w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Reset-Password-1.png 1364w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Click on Reset Password</figcaption></figure></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Three questions with their answer boxes appear. Write the exact answers you gave when setting the account then press <strong>enter</strong>.</li><li>Provide a <strong>new password</strong> and <strong>confirm</strong> the new password, and press <strong>enter</strong>.</li></ul>

<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/New-Password-window-1024x644.png" alt="Enter the new password" class="wp-image-17781" width="768" height="483" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/New-Password-window-1024x644.png 1024w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/New-Password-window-300x189.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/New-Password-window-768x483.png 768w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/New-Password-window.png 1368w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Enter the New Password</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Login with the new password without losing a single piece of data.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2: Reset forgotten password using password reset disk</strong></h2>

<p>Another way to reset the forgotten password on Windows 11 is through the password reset disk (It is a file you create on a USB flash drive and lets you safely reset the password later). This method is possible if you have already created a password reset disk on a USB flash drive. Since creating a password reset disk on Windows 11 and Windows 10 is the same, you can check this article <a href="https://technig.com/reset-windows-10-password/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reset Windows 10 password with password reset USB</a> for creating a password reset disk. After plugging in the USB flash drive or SD card that contains the password reset disk file, go ahead with the following steps to reset the local user account’s password.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>After entering the wrong password, click on the <strong>Reset Password</strong> link in the sign-in window.</li><li>Scroll down to the end of the questions and their boxes, then click on the <strong>Use a password reset disk instead </strong>link.</li></ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Use-password-reset-disk-instead-1024x576.png" alt="How to Reset Password on Windows 11 before Login" class="wp-image-17774" width="768" height="432" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Use-password-reset-disk-instead-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Use-password-reset-disk-instead-300x169.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Use-password-reset-disk-instead-768x432.png 768w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Use-password-reset-disk-instead.png 1366w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Click on Password Reset Disk</figcaption></figure></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Click <strong>next</strong> in the Password Reset Wizard. And the system automatically detects the USB Drive if you have inserted the USB already. After selecting the password reset disk from the top-down menu, click <strong>next</strong>.</li></ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Detect-the-Password-reset-disk-1024x814.jpg" alt="Detect the password reset disk" class="wp-image-17790" width="768" height="611" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Detect-the-Password-reset-disk-1024x814.jpg 1024w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Detect-the-Password-reset-disk-300x239.jpg 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Detect-the-Password-reset-disk-768x611.jpg 768w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Detect-the-Password-reset-disk-1536x1221.jpg 1536w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Detect-the-Password-reset-disk-2048x1628.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Insert the Password Reset Disk</figcaption></figure></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>New Window asks you to enter the new password, confirm it, type the new password hint, and click <strong>next</strong>.</li><li>Finish the password resetting, return to the sign-in window, and log in with the new password.</li></ul>

<p>You are done with resetting the password using the password reset disk.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3: Reset password without using USB, or other software</strong></h2>

<p>The third way to reset the password on Windows 11 before login into the computer is through a command prompt. This method does not need you to create a password reset disk, or must-have answered the security questions. Before starting to reset the password, you need to do the following process to get access to the CMD window in the sign-in window:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>In your sign-in window, press <strong>Shift-Key</strong> and restart your computer. This takes you to the <strong>Windows Recovery </strong>window. In the windows recovery, select <strong>Troubleshoot</strong> <strong>option</strong>.</li></ul>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Troubleshoot-1024x629.png" alt="How to Reset Password on Windows 11 before Login" class="wp-image-17775" width="768" height="472" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Troubleshoot-1024x629.png 1024w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Troubleshoot-300x184.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Troubleshoot-768x472.png 768w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Troubleshoot.png 1508w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Click on Troubleshoot Option</figcaption></figure></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Click <strong>Advanced Options </strong>&gt;<strong> See more recovery options </strong>&gt;<strong> System Image Recovery.</strong></li><li>Now click on the <strong>Select a system image</strong> and click <strong>next</strong>.</li></ul>

<p><strong>1.</strong> Boot the computer with USB and navigate to Windows Setup page then press <strong>Shift+F10 </strong>keys to open the command prompt (CMD).</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_142" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-142" style="width: 800px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-10-Setup.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-142 size-full" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-10-Setup.png" alt="Reset Lost Windows 10 Password using Bootable USB drive - Technig" width="800" height="443" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-10-Setup.png 800w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-10-Setup-300x166.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-10-Setup-768x425.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-142" class="wp-caption-text">Reset Lost Windows 10 Password using Bootable USB drive &#8211; Technig</figcaption></figure></p>

<p>You see all drives and <strong>D:\</strong> must be the Windows root directory because <strong>c:\</strong> is the reserved system drive for the windows boot loader.</p>
<p><strong>3.</strong> To change the directory of Windows, type<strong> &#8220;d:&#8221; </strong>and press enter. Then type &#8220;<strong>cd windows\system32&#8243;</strong> and press enter to go to Windows system 32 directories where some settings we need to change for resetting Windows 10 Password.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_144" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-144" style="width: 800px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Change-directory.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-144 size-full" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Change-directory.png" alt="Windows System32 directory" width="800" height="419" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Change-directory.png 800w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Change-directory-300x157.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Change-directory-768x402.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-144" class="wp-caption-text">Find Local Windows 10 Drive with Command Line</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>You can check all hard drives one by one to find your exact Windows system drive. It&#8217;s easy, do practice and learn some command line tips as well. But not practice on your real computer. Make a virtual lab on your computer and practice on a <a href="https://www.technig.com/tag/virtualization/">virtual machine</a>.</p>

<h2>Step 3. Replace Cmd.exe with Utilman.exe</h2>
<p>When you replace the <strong>Cmd.exe</strong> file with <strong>Utilman.exe </strong>file, you have gained access to the command prompt on the login page of Windows.</p>
<p><strong>1.</strong> Now just change the utility manager &#8220;<strong>Utilman.exe</strong>&#8221; to &#8220;<strong>Cmd.exe</strong>&#8220;. Before replacing the utility manager, try to take a backup of utility manager file with below command.</p>
<pre class="nums:false expand-toggle:false lang:default decode:true">ren Utilman.exe Utilman.bkp</pre>
<p><figure id="attachment_145" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-145" style="width: 784px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Utility-Manager.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-145 size-full" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Utility-Manager.png" alt="Replace CMD with Utility Manager" width="784" height="163" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Utility-Manager.png 784w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Utility-Manager-300x62.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Utility-Manager-768x160.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-145" class="wp-caption-text">Replace CMD with Utility Manager</figcaption></figure></p>
<p><strong>2.</strong> Next step, copy the &#8220;<strong>Cmd.exe</strong>&#8221; and renamed to &#8220;<strong>Utilman.exe</strong>&#8221; by typing the following command.</p>
<pre class="nums:false expand-toggle:false lang:default decode:true">copy cmd.exe Utilman.exe</pre>
<p>The Utility Manager has replaced with command prompt. Just remember, don&#8217;t bring changes to other Windows system files. When the process has finished, restart your PC with &#8220;<strong>shutdown -r -t 0</strong>&#8220;<strong> </strong>command and boot it normally.</p>
<h2>Step 4. Reset Lost Windows 10 Password</h2>
<p>That&#8217;s good. You are on the final stage. Here you can quickly reset lost Windows 10 password just with a simple command line.</p>
<p><strong>1.</strong> In the Windows login page click on utility manager in the left corner of the screen. Now the command prompt will open with administrator privilege instead of utility manager.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_154" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-154" style="width: 988px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-Utility-manager-in-login-page.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-154 size-full" src="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-Utility-manager-in-login-page.png" alt="Windows Utility manager in login page" width="988" height="422" srcset="https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-Utility-manager-in-login-page.png 988w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-Utility-manager-in-login-page-300x128.png 300w, https://www.technig.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Windows-Utility-manager-in-login-page-768x328.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 988px) 100vw, 988px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-154" class="wp-caption-text">Windows Utility Manager in the login page</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>That is good. Now you can reset the lost password of Windows with &#8220;<strong>net user</strong>&#8221; command. Using the net user and net local group command is easy. Try to learn about in <a href="https://www.technig.com/managing-user-account-using-command-line/">Managing User Account with Command Line</a> in Windows 10 article.</p>
<p>2. To reset the lost password of a user in Windows, type &#8220;net user username *&#8221; then press enter and type the new password twice.</p>
