I encountered the Unable to Verify Update Package signature issue while trying to upgrade the Dell PowerEdge R430 Server IDRAC. We can encounter this error when attempting to update an iDRAC when jumping up too many versions.

Summary: iDRAC update fails with the following error RED007: Unable to verify Update Package signature. Due to a change to the digital signature, Workaround must be used to complete the update. This is most probably due to the existing iDRAC setup lacking the required information about newer security (certificate) information for the much newer update installer.

A confirmed fix is to apply earlier updates to/for the iDRAC in a more step-wise manner: For instance, if the card is listed as version 2.2x.(etc), apply the update to 2.40.40.40 then 2.5x, etc. up to the latest update. It is often possible to skip one version, but as always, proceed with due care & caution.

How to Fix Unable to Verify Update Package signature

Resolution: The iDRAC7 and iDRAC8 Dell Update Packages (DUP) no longer carry SHA-1 digital signatures. This DUP change was introduced in iDRAC firmware 2.61.60.60 and later. iDRAC7 and iDRAC8 version 2.40.40.40 or later added support to verify the SHA256 signatures. iDRAC must be running one of the following versions to support SHA-256 DUP payloads through Out of Band updates.

In this case, I’m going to upgrade from the 2.21.21.21 version to the final 2.80.80.80, A00 version in a step-wise manner.

1. Go to the Dell Product Support page and search IDRAC update by your Service Tag of your Server and download the IDRAC and Lifecycle controller update.
2. Login to your IDRAC through the web interface using the IDRAC IP address.
3. Expand IDRAC Settings.
4. Click Update and Rollback.
5. On the Update table, select the download IDRAC and Lifecycle Controller update then click Upload.
6. Once the package is successfully uploaded, tick the checkbox of the uploaded file and click Install.
   • Note: I’ve updated the IDRAC and Lifecycle Controller on a Dell R430 Server in three step-wise manner from 2015 to 2021 versions.

7. Check the Job Queue to see the results. If you find a failed result, try with a lower version.

The final result should be successful. Refresh the page and log in to IDRAC again.

We are going to show you the easy way of making a Windows 11 UEFI Bootable USB for Installing Windows 11 or upgrading Windows 11 security. The 3 options we are going to make a bootable USB are Microsoft media creation tool, PowerShell command, and third-party application Rufus software.

The media creation tool is easy and a recommended option by Microsoft, but the rest are working perfectly.

Make Windows 11 UEFI Bootable USB

To make a Windows 11 UEFI Bootable USB correctly using the Microsoft media creation tool:

1. Download the Windows media creation tool.
2. Run the media creation tool.
3. Once it is opened, click Accept the application notices and license terms.
4. Select the language and edition you need, or use the recommended options for your PC, then click Next.
5. On the Choose which media to use page, select USB flash drive and click Next.
   • Note: The ISO file option will only download Windows 11 with the selected language and edition.
6. For the Select, a USB flash drive page, select your USB flash drive and click Next to begin downloading Windows and making the USB drive bootable.
   • Note: The files on your USB drive will be deleted. Back up your USB drive files to another safe location.
7. Once downloading Windows 11 has finished. Close the application, and your USB drive is ready for installing Windows 11 on another PC.

This Windows bootable USB is ready for Windows 11 clean installation and upgrading Windows 10 on an offline PC.

Note: If you don’t have a Windows 11 license you can Download Windows 11 enterprise and use it free for 6 months. After that, you can reinstall or buying a license.

Make sure you have:

• Sufficient data storage available on the computer, USB, or external drive you download Windows 11 iso file.
• A blank USB or blank DVD. Best options is using USB drive. The content on it will be deleted during installation. Make sure you don’t have important contend on your USB.

Ensure the PC you want to install Windows 11:

• Has a 64-bit CPU: Windows 11 can only run on 64-bit CPUs. To see if your PC has one, go to Settings > System > About, or search “System Information” in Windows and look under “System Type.”
• Meets system requirements: Not all devices running Windows 10 are eligible to receive a Windows 11 upgrade. See the Windows 11 device specifications for upgrade requirements and supported features. Certain features require additional hardware. We also recommend that you visit your PC’s manufacturer website for information about updated drivers and hardware compatibility.

Using the Media Creation Tool to create installation media:

1. Download media creation tool and run it as administrator to create a Windows 11 bootable USB. Or read this article to Make a Windows 11 bootable USB using diskpart command line utility.
2. If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.
3. On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.
4. Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit) for Windows 11.
5. Select which media you want to use:
   • USB flash drive: Attach a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.
   • ISO file: Save an ISO file to your PC. This can be used to create a bootable DVD. After the file is downloaded, you can go to location where the file is saved, or select Open DVD burner, and follow the instructions to burn the file to a DVD.

After the installation media is created, follow the steps below to use it.

• To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. You may also wish to visit your device manufacturer’s support site for any additional drivers that may be needed.
• Note: Drivers for Surface devices may be found on the Download drivers and firmware for Surface page.

Important Note: Before you install Windows 11, it’s a good idea to save any work and back up your PC before you start. If you used the Media Creation Tool to download an ISO file for Windows 11, remember to burn it to a DVD before following these steps:

1. Attach the USB flash drive or insert the DVD on the PC where you want to install Windows 11.
2. Restart your PC.
   • If your PC does not automatically boot to the USB or DVD media, you might have to open a boot menu or change the boot order in your PC’s BIOS or UEFI settings.
   • To open a boot menu or change the boot order, you’ll typically need to press a key (such as F2, F12, Delete, or Esc) immediately after you turn on your PC. For instructions on accessing the boot menu or changing the boot order for your PC, check the documentation that came with your PC or go to the manufacturer’s website.
   • If you do not see the USB or DVD media device listed within the boot options, you may need to reach out to the PC manufacturer for instructions for temporarily disabling Secure Boot in your BIOS settings.
   • If changing the boot menu or order doesn’t work, and your PC immediately boots into the OS you want to replace, it is possible the PC had not fully shut down. To ensure the PC fully shuts down, select the power button on the sign-in screen or on the Start menu and select Shut down.
3. On the Install Windows page, select your language, time, and keyboard preferences, and then select Next.
4. Select Install Windows.
5. Go ahead and complete the Windows 11 installation like Windows 10 installation.

A simple guide to know and verify secure boot is enabled in Windows 10 or Windows 11. The Secure Boot protects the boot process against security attacks from malicious code like malware and ransomware. Secure Boot is firmware-dependent and requires that the computer BIOS is set to UEFI mode. The Secure Boot is an important security feature designed to prevent malicious software from loading when your PC starts up (boots).  Most modern PCs are capable of Secure Boot, but in some instances, there may be settings that cause the PC to appear to not be capable of Secure Boot. These settings can be changed in the PC firmware. Firmware, often called BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), is the software that starts up before Windows when you first turn on your PC. 

How to Verify Secure Boot is Enabled in Windows 10/11

1. Click the Windows Button to the bottom left of the screen or press the Windows Key.
2. In the Search Bar, type: System Information
3. Press Enter.
4. System Information will open, and System Summary should be selected by default.
5. On the right side of this screen, look for BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
6. If Secure Boot is enabled, the BIOS Mode will show “UEFI,”.

Try to check out on the System Information page to find the BIOS Mode. If the BIOS Mode shows “Legacy” in the Boot setting in the computer BIOS, it must be switched from Legacy to UEFI mode. Read this article about switch Legacy BIOS to UEFI mode.

Check Secure Boot Status using Powershell

To confirms that Secure Boot is enabled by checking the Secure Boot status on the local computer using Powershell comamnd. This command checks whether Secure Boot is enabled on the computer.

1. Press Windows key type Powershell.
2. Right click the PowerShell and run the Powershell as administrator, or (Press Ctrl+Shfit then press enter to run powershell as Administrator).
3. Type the following command and check the result.

PS C:\> Confirm-SecureBootUEFI
True

The Confirm-SecureBootUEFI cmdlet confirms that Secure Boot is enabled by checking the Secure Boot status on a UEFI computer.

• If the computer supports Secure Boot and Secure Boot is enabled, this cmdlet returns $True.
• If the computer supports Secure Boot and Secure Boot is disabled, this cmdlet returns $False.

If the computer does not support Secure Boot or is a BIOS (non-UEFI) computer, this cmdlet displays the following:

Cmdlet not supported on this platform.

If Windows PowerShell® is not run in administrator mode, this cmdlet displays the following:

Unable to set proper privileges. Access was denied.

This cmdlet requires that Windows PowerShell be run in administrator mode. So make sure you run the Powershell as administrator.

What is Secure Boot?

Secure Boot protects the boot process against security attacks from malicious code like malware and ransomware. Secure Boot is firmware-dependent and requires that the computer BIOS is set to UEFI mode. The Secure Boot is an important security feature designed to prevent malicious software from loading when your PC starts up (boots).  Most modern PCs are capable of Secure Boot, but in some instances, there may be settings that cause the PC to appear to not be capable of Secure Boot. These settings can be changed in the PC firmware. Firmware, often called BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), is the software that starts up before Windows when you first turn on your PC. 

The process of changing the BIOS settings are the same or with little differences on various manufacturer PCs. You can check the article about “All Laptops And Desktops System BIOS Boot Keys“.

How to Verify that Secure Boot is Enabled?

1. Click the Windows Button to the bottom left of the screen or press the Windows Key.
2. In the Search Bar, type: System Information
3. Press Enter.
4. System Information will open, and System Summary should be selected by default.
5. On the right side of this screen, look for BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
6. If Secure Boot is enabled, the BIOS Mode will show “UEFI,”.

Check on the System Information page to find out the BIOS Mode. If the BIOS Mode shows “Legacy” in the Boot setting in the computer BIOS, it must be switched from Legacy to UEFI mode. Verify Secure Boot with PowerShell.

How to Fix This PC must Support Secure Boot?

You need to restart your computer in order to change the Legacy BIOS boot to UEFI mode. To access the settings, you can consult your PC manufacturer’s documentation or follow these instructions:

On Windows try to Run Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Restart now under Advanced startup. From the next screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart to make changes.

If you can’t find Recovery under Update & Security, just search for the “recovery” key then click on Reset this PC to go to Recovery window.  

To change these settings, you will need to switch the PC boot mode from one enabled as “Legacy” BIOS (also known as “CSM” Mode) to UEFI/BIOS (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). In some cases, there are options to enable both UEFI and Legacy/CSM. If so, you will need to choose for UEFI to be the first or only option. If you are unsure how to make any necessary changes to enable the UEFI/BIOS, we recommend that you check your PC manufacturer’s support information on their website.  Here are a few links to information from some PC manufacturers to help get you started:

Switching from Legacy to UEFI Mode

1. Boot your computer.
2. Tap the F2 key when the Dell logo appears to enter the BIOS. The boot key is different on different manufacturer PCs. If you computer is different, check it’s boot keys here all Laptops And Desktops System BIOS Boot Keys.
3. The following steps can vary based on your computer model:

For Alienware, Inspiron and Vostro Laptops.

• Go to Boot -> Change Secure Boot List Option to UEFI.
• Press the F10 key to Save and Exit.

For Dell OptiPlex, Precision, Wyse, and XPS machines.

• Go to General -> Boot Sequence -> Boot List Option – Change to UEFI.
• Click Apply -> click Exit – Save the Changes.

Enabling Secure Boot

Secure Boot is controlled by the computer firmware (BIOS) and can be enabled with a few simple steps:

1. Boot your computer.
2. Tap the F2 key when the Dell logo appears to enter the BIOS.
3. The following steps can vary based on your computer model:

Alienware, Inspiron and Vostro

• Go to Secure Boot -> Change Secure Boot to Enabled. 
• Press the F10 key to Save and Exit.

OptiPlex, Precision, Wyse, and XPS

• Go to Secure Boot -> Secure Boot Enable -> Check Secure Boot Enable. 
• Click Apply -> click Exit -> Save the changes.

The computer will restart and boot back to the Windows desktop.

For other computer manufacturers:

• Lenovo
• HP
• To find out boot keys for all Laptops And Desktops System BIOS Boot Keys.

While the requirement to upgrade a Windows 10 device to Windows 11 is only that the PC be Secure Boot capable by having UEFI/BIOS enabled, you may also consider enabling or turning Secure Boot on for better security.

Once you enabled secure boot on your computer, you can securely upgrade to Windows 11.  There are 3 different options to upgrade to Windows 11 from any Windows 10 PC.

• Server Core: This is the recommended installation option. Hardware Requirements for Windows Server

Processor

Processor performance depends not only on the clock frequency of the processor but also on the number of processor cores and the size of the processor cache. The following are the processor requirements for this product:

Minimum:

• 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor
• Compatible with the x64 instruction set
• Supports NX and DEP
• Supports CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, and PrefetchW
• Supports Second Level Address Translation (EPT or NPT)

RAM

Minimum:

• 512 MB (2 GB for Server with Desktop Experience installation option)
• ECC (Error Correcting Code) type or similar technology, for physical host deployments.

Storage

Minimum: 32 GB

Note: Be aware that 32 GB should be considered an absolute minimum value for a successful installation. This minimum should allow you to install Windows Server 2022 using the Server Core installation option, with the Web Services (IIS) server role. A server in Server Core mode is about 4 GB smaller than the same server using the Server with Desktop Experience installation option.

The system partition will need extra space for any of the following circumstances:

• If you install the system over a network.
• Computers with more than 16 GB of RAM will require more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files.

The error of “User account does not have permission to open attachment” in Hyper-V Server can occur when you try to use an ISO located on a network drive as a boot drive for a VM. A workaround is to copy the ISOs on the host machine directly but that’s inconvenient and tedious. Follow these steps to fix the permissions and allow Hyper-V to use images through SMB.

User Account Does Not Have Permission

We can fix the user account that does not have permission to open an attachment in Hyper-v with two stages. The first one granting the Hyper-V server access to the network shared folder and the second stage enabling CIFS delegation on the Hyper-V machine.

To fix this issue you must have an AD domain account to grant the Hyper-V host access to the network share.

1. Grant the Hyper-V Machine Access to the Network Shared File.

1. Right-click the network shared folder and open the properties then click Edit under the Security tab.
2. Click Add in the new window then click on Object Types and tick the checkbox next to Computers and then press OK to apply the changes.

3. Now, type the name of the Hyper-V machine which you want to authorize on the shared folder and then press Check Names to validate. After validating the name just click the OK button to add it.

Note: If you do not tick the checkbox of Computers on Object Types the system will not find your Hyper-V machine. Make sure you’ve ticked the Computer checkbox and also your machine should be joined to the domain.

4. Click OK to close all the opened file sharing permissions windows to complete the first stage successfully.

2. Enable CIFS Delegation on the Hyper-V Machine

The CIFS delegation gives service administrators the ability to specify and enforce application trust boundaries by limiting the scope where application services can act on a user’s behalf. Service administrators can configure which front-end service accounts can delegate to their back-end services.

On your AD domain controller complete the following steps.

1. Open the Server Manager then click Active Directory Users and Computers from Tools menu. Or type the dsa.msc on Windows Run to open Active Directory Users and Computers only using shortcut.
2. Expand domain, and then expand the Computers folder.
3. In the right pane, right-click the Hyper-V Machine name, and then click Properties.
4. On the Delegation tab, select Trust this computer for delegation to specified services only and Use any authentication protocol.
5. Click Add to open the Add Services dialog window.

6. Select the Users or Computers on Add Services window, and type the computer name where the network shared folder is located then validate it by clicking on Check Name and click OK.

7. Select the CIFS service for the file-sharing server and click OK to enable CIFS delegation on the Hyper-V Server.

8. Finally, click OK to close all opened windows. Now you can install operating systems on your Hyper-V server virtual machines via network shared files.
