I was upgrading Bitnami WordPress, after completing the WordPress migration and WordPress essential configuration then encountered with WordPress site URL greyed out. I’ve tested different tips and tricks from internet articles but was not successful.

1. Check the WordPress URLs from inside the phpMyAdmin WP-Options table.
2. Change WordPress site URLs using functions.php file from /wp-content/themes/your-theme-folder/.
3. And more configuration changes.

Fix WordPress Site URL Greyed out – Bitnami WordPress.

The first simple thing you should consider is If the WordPress address (URL) is greyed out on the settings page of your admin area, then it means that the URLs are hardcoded in the wp-config.php file of WordPress.

Note: When the WordPress Address URL and Site Address are greyed out and not editable, we can’t change the HTTP to HTTPS then it will cause the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error in the web browser.

How to Fix ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error?

The ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS (also known as a redirect loop) is one we see on a regular basis. Typically the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error occurs after a recent change on your WordPress site, a misconfiguration of redirects on your server, or wrong settings with third-party services.

The ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error is not always coming from the misconfiguration of the WordPress URL. To avoid and Fix the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error you have to clear browser caches or using to test with different web browsers. If it’s not working then go for another solution.

Let’s back to fix the WordPress site URL greyed out in Bitnami WordPress. To fix the WordPress site URL greyed out in Bitnami WordPress you need to change the HTTP to HTTPS from /opt/bitnami/apps/wordpress/htdocs/wp-config.php file.

Try to open the wp-config.php file with a text editor and change the HTTP to HTTPS for both lines of code of WP_SITEURL and WP_HOME.

When you have done the task, just save the file and restart your Web Server services with the following Linux command line or Bitnami ctlscript.sh file.

sudo /opt/bitnami/ctlscript.sh restart

Done!

Now, go ahead and refresh your WordPress admin page, then check the result of fix the WordPress site URL greyed out and ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error in web browsers. The issue should be fixed like the below screenshot.

In this short tips and trick tutorial, you will learn how to limit WordPress the_content words length . We will show you the different ways to do that plus the best and recommended way.

How to Limit WordPress the_content Words

You use the_content function in almost every page of your WordPress theme. For instance you use in index.php file and  it will echo all the content for one post or page. But you don’t want to show all content. Maybe only 50 words. Here how you can limit the_content.

Using Filter Hoock

Open your functions.php file and write the following code.

  function technig_the_content($content)
  {
    // Take the existing content and return a subset of characters it
    return substr($content, 0, 500);
  }

  add_filter("the_content", "technig_the_content");

The only problem with this method is that, it will filter the_content and shows 500 character no-matter where you have used. For example, if you have used in in single post which you display all the content, it will display only that 500 characters. ( not a good way )

Using wp_trim_words

This method is probably easy and short solution. Every time you use the_content function, apply the wp_trim_words function on it.

You can’t use the_content function because you it will echo the content directly. Instead, we use get_the_content() function. 

Using Custom Function

This method is going to be the best and most flexible way to limit WordPress the_content words length. Write the following custom function in your functions.php file.

WordPress makes it easy to change and customize site permalink or url in just a few options. Open your WordPress dashboard and go to settings > permalinks.

Basically, There are two ways to customize and make the permalink pretty. One, by writing a simple function in your functions.php file of you theme. Two, writing a custom structure to the given option in permalinks page.

We will go through but ways. The only disadvantage for first way is this. If you change your theme, the options might not work. So make sure which you way is suitable for you. 

First Option

Open your functions.php file which is in your active theme directory and past the following code.

Nowadays we see Google search in almost every WordPress site or blogs. There are many advantage to use Google Search. How to add WordPress Google Search

The first thing we are going to need is to generate Google search box code from Google CSE. CSE stand for Custom Search Engine. You can generate you code by adding your site name to cse.google.com.

You probably already used Google account to register your site, if not, login and add your site. Once you login, click on add button and fill the necessary information.

One added your site, now you click on Get code button to copy the code we need.

Depending on your site, it will generate a unique code for you. Here is what we have generated.

By unique code, I means the code we generate is completely different from the code you generate. So make sure you are not copying our code.

Now, open your theme folder. It is located in the wp-content/theme/yourtheme.  You see a searchform.php file there, open that file with notepad or any other text editor you have. Now past the code you have copied form Google CSE site. Save the file and close.

Now you can go to widget page of your WordPress site and add the search widget to side bar. Instead of default WordPress site search box, you will see the Google search. If you search anything in that field now, It will open a modal dialog and show the result.

In previous tutorial, you have learn how to add and configure the WordPress Kirki customizer. In this tutorial we will continue on by learning how to add panel, section sections and control to our WordPress customizer. If you have came to this tutorial directly, I recommend to read the previous tutorial first.

If you look at the above picture, you will understand the concept of a panel, section, settings and controls better. The first thing you will need to do is to create a panel. After creating the panel, you can add section and hook them inside that panel. Inside sections, you can add control or section or maybe to say it clearly, adding fields options.

Creating Panel in WordPress Kirki Customizer

So, let’s start adding our first line of code and make a panel in WordPress theme Customizer. To do that, all you need is to write an function and inside that function add your panel using add_panel() function.

Example:

Now, inside technig_options() function, we can add our panel and sections. You can add as many panel as you want. But before that, we should hook this function to WordPress customize_register() function.

Here is how you do that.

Until now, if you check the WordPress Customizer, you will see nothing. It’s because, WordPress will show the panel if there is no section hooked to that. In the same way it will show the section if their is no setting hook in to it. So let’s add the section and hook it as well.

First, Create the section. Inside teching_options() function add the following code for adding a general option section.

Now, you can use get_theme_mod() function to display the value of the field anywhere in your theme. For our demo, which is favicon, we will use it as favicon in the header of our site.

You can install the Kirki as a plugin form WordPress plugin directory. If you are a developer and want to add the Kirki in your theme or plugin, you can download the Kirki plugin and put in your theme folder. For this demo we will use a demo theme generated by Underscores. After extracting the plugin file, put the kirki folder with all files anywhere in your theme directory.

Add the following code to your function.php. change the directory the way you put the kirki files.

Once you include the kirki files, you need add the configuration. Configurations allow each project to use a different setup and act as identifiers. We will create a simple config function.
