I was upgrading Bitnami WordPress, after completing the WordPress migration and WordPress essential configuration then encountered with WordPress site URL greyed out. I’ve tested different tips and tricks from internet articles but was not successful.

Check the WordPress URLs from inside the phpMyAdmin WP-Options table.

Change WordPress site URLs using functions.php file from /wp-content/themes/your-theme-folder/.

And more configuration changes.

Fix WordPress Site URL Greyed out – Bitnami WordPress.

The first simple thing you should consider is If the WordPress address (URL) is greyed out on the settings page of your admin area, then it means that the URLs are hardcoded in the wp-config.php file of WordPress.

Fix WordPress Site URL Greyed out – Bitnami WordPress in LightSail and GCP

Note: When the WordPress Address URL and Site Address are greyed out and not editable, we can’t change the HTTP to HTTPS then it will cause the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error in the web browser.

Fix ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error

How to Fix ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error?

The ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS (also known as a redirect loop) is one we see on a regular basis. Typically the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error occurs after a recent change on your WordPress site, a misconfiguration of redirects on your server, or wrong settings with third-party services.

The ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error is not always coming from the misconfiguration of the WordPress URL. To avoid and Fix the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS error you have to clear browser caches or using to test with different web browsers. If it’s not working then go for another solution.

Let’s back to fix the WordPress site URL greyed out in Bitnami WordPress. To fix the WordPress site URL greyed out in Bitnami WordPress you need to change the HTTP to HTTPS from /opt/bitnami/apps/wordpress/htdocs/wp-config.php file.

You can also use it to move your site to/from local server hosting, to create copies of your website for development or testing purposes, to backup your site, and to install pre-configured versions of WordPress.

5. WP Migrate DB

WP Migrate DB – Best WordPress clone site plugin

The last one is WP Migrate DB. It exports your database as a MySQL data dump (much like phpMyAdmin), does a find and replace on URLs and file paths, handles serialized data, then allows you to save it to your computer as an SQL file. To complete the migration, you need to use a database management tool (e.g. phpMyAdmin) to import the SQL file to your database, replacing your existing database. It is perfect for developers who need to migrate fresh data from the production site to their local install or migrate their locally developed site to a staging or production server.

In this short tips and trick tutorial, you will learn how to limit WordPress the_content words length . We will show you the different ways to do that plus the best and recommended way.

How to Limit WordPress the_content Words

You use the_content function in almost every page of your WordPress theme. For instance you use in index.php file and it will echo all the content for one post or page. But you don’t want to show all content. Maybe only 50 words. Here how you can limit the_content.

Using Filter Hoock

Open your functions.php file and write the following code.

  function technig_the_content($content)
  {
    // Take the existing content and return a subset of characters it
    return substr($content, 0, 500);
  }

  add_filter("the_content", "technig_the_content");

The only problem with this method is that, it will filter the_content and shows 500 character no-matter where you have used. For example, if you have used in in single post which you display all the content, it will display only that 500 characters. ( not a good way )

Using wp_trim_words

This method is probably easy and short solution. Every time you use the_content function, apply the wp_trim_words function on it.

<?php
        echo wp_trim_words( get_the_content(), 80 );
?>

You can’t use the_content function because you it will echo the content directly. Instead, we use get_the_content() function.

Using Custom Function

This method is going to be the best and most flexible way to limit WordPress the_content words length. Write the following custom function in your functions.php file.

function technig_content($limit){
  $content = explode(' ', get_the_content(), $limit);

  if (count($content)>=$limit){
       array_pop($content);
       $content = implode(" ",$content).'...';
  } else {
    $content = implode(" ",$content);
  }

  $content = preg_replace('/\[.+\]/','', $content);
  $content = apply_filters('the_content', $content);
  $content = str_replace('', ']]>', $content);
  return $content;
}

Use the custom function instead of the_content. For example:

<?php echo technig_content(30); ?>

Conclusion

You can use the_excerpt() function as will to display less content. But still you will need to modify the length of the words in that. We hope you have learn something and use it in you next project. Feel free to ask you question bellow. 🙂

Here in Technig, we have quite a few tips and tricks about WordPress and theme development. In this short tutorial, you will learn how to customize WordPress site permalink to make it look pretty.

How to Change WordPress Site Permalink?

WordPress makes it easy to change and customize site permalink or url in just a few options. Open your WordPress dashboard and go to settings > permalinks.

Customize WordPress site permalink

By default, there quite a few options that you can choose.

Customize WordPress site permalink

But, sometime this options are not what you want. Fore instance, you might want to show the post-title/id or id/post-title.

Example:

https://example.com/I-love-coding/55123

In those situations, the default options would’t work.

How to Customize WordPress Site Permalink

Basically, There are two ways to customize and make the permalink pretty. One, by writing a simple function in your functions.php file of you theme. Two, writing a custom structure to the given option in permalinks page.

We will go through but ways. The only disadvantage for first way is this. If you change your theme, the options might not work. So make sure which you way is suitable for you.

First Option

Open your functions.php file which is in your active theme directory and past the following code.

add_action( "init", "technig_permalink" );
function technig_permalink() {

    //This rule will match : I-love-coding/55123
    add_rewrite_rule(
        '^([^/]*)/([0-9]+)/?',
        'index.php?p=$matches[2]',
        'top' );

   //This rule will match : 55123/I-love-coding
    add_rewrite_rule(
        '^([0-9]+)/([^/]*)/?',
        'index.php?p=$matches[1]',
        'top' );

}

Choose one the above rules.

Second Option

The second option will be easy and most convenient way. Select the Custom Structure and write the following value.

/%postname%/%post_id%

Customize WordPress URL

That’s it. There are many other options and variable that you might want to use.

%year%
The year of the post, four digits, for example 2004
%monthnum%
Month of the year, for example 05
%day%
Day of the month, for example 28
%hour%
Hour of the day, for example 15
%minute%
Minute of the hour, for example 43
%second%
Second of the minute, for example 33
%post_id%
The unique ID # of the post, for example 423
%postname%
A sanitized version of the title of the post (post slug field on Edit Post/Page panel). So “This Is A Great Post!” becomes this-is-a-great-post in the URI.
%category%
A sanitized version of the category name (category slug field on New/Edit Category panel). Nested sub-categories appear as nested directories in the URI.
%author%
A sanitized version of the author name.

Conclusion

WordPress is not only a blogging CMS, you can customize every piece of it and make it look the way you want. We hope you have learned something and if you have any questions, feel free to comment it bellow. 🙂

Nowadays we see Google search in almost every WordPress site or blogs. There are many advantage to use Google Search. The benefits of using Google search are speed, users already trust Google brand, you will not have to maintain or update it and if you have adsense account, you can advertise your product on Google search result page. The default WordPress search is not much useful, that’s why every WordPress site owner look for an alternative solutions. There are many plugins for WordPress Google search implementation, but we will show you without plugin solution.

How to add WordPress Google Search

The first thing we are going to need is to generate Google search box code from Google CSE. CSE stand for Custom Search Engine. You can generate you code by adding your site name to cse.google.com.

WordPress Google Search

You probably already used Google account to register your site, if not, login and add your site. Once you login, click on add button and fill the necessary information.

Add WordPress Google search page

One added your site, now you click on Get code button to copy the code we need.

get to for WordPress google search

Depending on your site, it will generate a unique code for you. Here is what we have generated.

<gcse:search></gcse:search>

By unique code, I means the code we generate is completely different from the code you generate. So make sure you are not copying our code.

Now, open your theme folder. It is located in the wp-content/theme/yourtheme. You see a searchform.php file there, open that file with notepad or any other text editor you have. Now past the code you have copied form Google CSE site. Save the file and close.

Now you can go to widget page of your WordPress site and add the search widget to side bar. Instead of default WordPress site search box, you will see the Google search. If you search anything in that field now, It will open a modal dialog and show the result.

Conclusion

If you want to customize and make the search field look different, you can customize it from Google CSE. Make sure you save the customize code and replace the searchform.php file with the new code generated. We have it has been informative for you. If you have any question or problem, feel free to share it bellow. 🙂

In previous tutorial, you have learn how to add and configure the WordPress Kirki customizer. In this tutorial we will continue on by learning how to add panel, section sections and control to our WordPress customizer. If you have came to this tutorial directly, I recommend to read the previous tutorial first.

WordPress Kirki Customizer

If you look at the above picture, you will understand the concept of a panel, section, settings and controls better. The first thing you will need to do is to create a panel. After creating the panel, you can add section and hook them inside that panel. Inside sections, you can add control or section or maybe to say it clearly, adding fields options.

Creating Panel in WordPress Kirki Customizer

So, let’s start adding our first line of code and make a panel in WordPress theme Customizer. To do that, all you need is to write an function and inside that function add your panel using add_panel() function.

Example:

function technig_options( $wp_customize ) {
	/**
	 * Add panels
	 */
	$wp_customize->add_panel( 'technig_theme_options', array(
		'priority'    => 10,
		'title'       => __( 'Theme Options', 'technig' ),
	) );
}

Now, inside technig_options() function, we can add our panel and sections. You can add as many panel as you want. But before that, we should hook this function to WordPress customize_register() function.

Here is how you do that.

add_action( 'customize_register', 'technig_options' );

Until now, if you check the WordPress Customizer, you will see nothing. It’s because, WordPress will show the panel if there is no section hooked to that. In the same way it will show the section if their is no setting hook in to it. So let’s add the section and hook it as well.

First, Create the section. Inside teching_options() function add the following code for adding a general option section.

	/**
	 * Add sections
	 */
       $wp_customize->add_section( 'general_options', array(
 		'title'       => __( 'General Options', 'technig' ),
 		'priority'    => 10,
 		'panel'       => 'technig_theme_options',
 	) );

Secondly, create a function for fields and hook it into general options section. For this example, will use image uploader to upload a favicon and than use it in our site.

function technig_fields( $wp_customize ) {

   /*General Options*/
    $fields[] = array(
	'type'        => 'image',
	'settings'    => 'fav_icon',
	'label'       => __( 'Favicon', 'technig' ),
	'description' => __( 'Upload your site favicon here', 'technig' ),
	'section'     => 'general_options',
	'default'     => '',
	'priority'    => 10,
);

    return $fields;
}

add_filter( 'kirki/fields', 'technig_fields' );

Now, check the WordPress Customizer, you have successfully add the first panel, section and fields with WordPress Kirki customizer. It will look like this.

WordPress Kirki Customizer

How to Use the Value?

Now, you can use get_theme_mod() function to display the value of the field anywhere in your theme. For our demo, which is favicon, we will use it as favicon in the header of our site.

Example :

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="<?php echo get_theme_mod('fav_icon'); ?>" />

Conclusion.

This was the part two of the WordPress Kirki Customizer. We have successfully created our theme option panel with section, settings and fields inside. In the next part will discuss about more fields like radio, radio-image, checkbox, textrea and more. We will also discuss about conditional statements and default values in Kirki. I hope it has been informative for you. If you have any types of questions related to this topic, feel free to comment it below. 🙂

What is Kirki WordPress Theme Customizer?

According to documentation.

Kirki is a Toolkit allowing WordPress developers to use the Customizer and take advantage of its advanced features and flexibility by abstracting the code and making it easier for everyone to create beautiful and meaningful user experiences.

So, Kirki is not only a plugin, but a Toolkit.

How to Include Kirki in Your WordPress Theme ?

You can install the Kirki as a plugin form WordPress plugin directory. If you are a developer and want to add the Kirki in your theme or plugin, you can download the Kirki plugin and put in your theme folder. For this demo we will use a demo theme generated by Underscores. After extracting the plugin file, put the kirki folder with all files anywhere in your theme directory.

Add the following code to your function.php. change the directory the way you put the kirki files.

include_once( dirname( __FILE__ ) . '/inc/plugins/kirki/kirki.php' );

Once you include the kirki files, you need add the configuration. Configurations allow each project to use a different setup and act as identifiers. We will create a simple config function.

function mytheme_kirki_configuration() {
    return array( 'url_path'     => get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/inc/plugins/kirki/' );
}
add_filter( 'kirki/config', 'mytheme_kirki_configuration' );

Once you add the config files, you can starting adding you panel, section and settings in the customizer panel.

What are Panel, Section and Settings?

There is no better way of understanding this concepts than explaining in picture.

Kirki WordPress Theme Customizer

If you test you site speed with google PageSpeed or GTmetrix, you will see some statistics about page speed or Yslow score. You most probably want to see a high score. this article is all about how to speedup WordPress site up to 90% with simple tricks. Though there are many plugins like W3 Total Cache or Gzip Ninja, this tutorial will show you the trick without those plugins. So, all you need is to have access to your site cpanel.

What are the Most Common Speed Problems?

There some problems that page speed tester websites mention with testing our site. Here are list of them and how to solve them.

How to solve: Defer parsing of JavaScript?

How to solve:Remove query strings from static resources?

How to solve: Specify a cache validator?

How to solve: Enable gzip compression?

How to solve: Leverage browser caching?

How to solve: Enable Keep-Alive?

How to solve: Specify a cache validator?

and more…

We are going to use GTmertix for testing our site speed, you can use any other speed tester as you want.

Speedup WordPress site

To remove query strings from static resources in WordPress site, simply past the following code in your theme function.php file. If you are not a developer, call someone who know’s about theme development in WordPress to do this step for you.

function _remove_script_version( $src ){
$parts = explode( '?', $src );
return $parts[0];
}
add_filter( 'script_loader_src', '_remove_script_version', 15, 1 );
add_filter( 'style_loader_src', '_remove_script_version', 15, 1 );

To solve others problems, just add the following code in you .htaccess file. The htaccess file must be in the root directory of you site. (make sure you talk a copy of you htaccess before adding this code).

Note: There might be some lines in your htaccess file which is already generated by WordPress. You can add this code at the end of that code. But I recommend to replace all of that with the following code. It’s standard code plus speedup WordPress site code.

# BEGIN WordPress.
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

But as with any other system there are potential security issues that may arise if some basic security precautions aren’t taken. there are so many tutorial on WordPress security tips WordPress security best practices. One of the most important thing you might want to do for security is to change WordPress default login url. This article will go through the basic way on how to change WordPress default login url, logo and title.

How to change the logo and logo url?

Replacing default login page logo is very easy. Just open your function.php file in your active theme directory. Now past the following code and customize it a little.

function technig_login_logo() {
	echo '';
}
add_action('login_head', 'technig_login_logo');

This function will look for image folder in your theme directory that contain a logo.png picture. Make sure you have the correct directory.

Change the url?

When you click on the logo, by default, it will open WordPress.org. To change the url to open your own site, apply the following function.

function technig_login_logo_url() {
	return get_bloginfo( 'url' );
}
add_filter( 'login_headerurl', 'technig_login_logo_url' );

function technig_login_logo_url_title() {
return 'Your Site Name and Info';
}
add_filter( 'login_headertitle', 'technig_login_logo_url_title' );

change the title the way you want.
