In computing, a virtual machine (VM) is an emulation of a computer system. The virtual machines are based on computer architectures and provide the functionality of a physical computer. Their implementations may involve specialized hardware, software, or a combination.

There are different kinds of virtual machines:

• System virtual machines (also termed full virtualization VMs) provide a substitute for a real computer. They provide the functionality needed to execute entire operating systems. What is Hyper-V in Windows 10?

The Microsoft Hyper-V, formerly known as Windows Server Virtualization, is a native hypervisor; it can create virtual machines on x86-64 systems running Windows. Enable and Configure Hyper-V

Hyper-v is not a downloadable and installable virtualization software like VMware or VirtualBox. It is a Windows 10 built-in feature that can be easily enabled and disabled.

Hyper-V System Requirements on Windows 10: 

• Windows 10 Enterprise, Professional, or Education
• 64-bit Processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
• CPU support for VM Monitor Mode Extension (VT-c on Intel CPU’s).

To install Hyper-V on Windows 10:

1. Open Windows Features.
2. Enable Hyper-V option.
3. Restart your computer.

1. Press Windows+R keys on the keyboard to open Windows Run. And type “optionalfeatures” and press enter to open Windows Features. Then select Hyper-V from Windows features and click OK to enable Hyper-v on Windows 10.

After enabling Hyper-v on Windows 10, it prompts to restart your computer for applying the Windows changes. Just save your works and click Restart now to restart your PC.

That was using GUI for installing and configuring Hyper-V on Windows 10. But Hyper-V has some PowerShell commands as well. Let’s test how to enable Hyper-V using PowerShell on Windows 10 and Windows Server?

Enable Hyper-V Using PowerShell:

Open a PowerShell console as Administrator and run the following command:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V -All

No matter, you have installed Hyper-V using PowerShell command or GUI, you must restart your computer for applying changes.

Enable Hyper-V with DISM command in Command Prompt

This is another command-line option to enable Hyper-V on Windows 10. The Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool (DISM) helps configure Windows and Windows images. Among its many applications, DISM can enable Windows features while the operating system is running.

To enable the Hyper-V role using DISM:

1. Open up a PowerShell or CMD session as Administrator.
2. Type the following command.

DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /All /FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V

OK.

When you restart your computer, just press type “Hyper-v” on Windows search to find the Hyper-V virtualization software. Yes, check the below screenshot shows the Hyper-V on my computer.

That’s good, your Hyper-v has been enabled and it is ready for server virtualization on Windows 10. The next step is configuring Hyper-v on Windows 10 for server virtualization or practising for the cloud computing network.

How to Install Android Oreo on VMware?

Installing an operating system on a virtualized environment is like installing an operating system on a real computer. Just download the Vmware or VirtualBox virtualization software and install it on your computer.

3. Create a Virtual Machine for Android Oreo.
4. Boot the Android Oreo.

In Hyper-v you can connect Hyper-v machines to Internet with two methods that I’m going to explain all step by step. This article is for those, who know the basic of Server Virtualization with Hyper-v. If you don’t know about Hyper-v Virtualization software, I recommend you to read the previews articles of Hyper-V installation and configuration posts.

• Install Hyper-V: Hyper-v Beginner: A Practical Guide to Virtualization. This post shows you how to install Hyper-v on Windows client 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2016.
• Configure the necessary Hyper-V settings: Essential Hyper-V Configuration. Explain the configuration of Hyper-v for beginner to create a virtualization testing Lab.

Hyper-v Virtual Switches

The virtual switch is a logical switch which connects virtual machines. Currently, Hyper-v has three different types of virtual switch which I told the preview article also.

• External: Switch is used to connect the virtual machines to external network and Internet. The virtual machines (Guest) and Host will be on the same network.
• Internal: Switch is used to create network connection between guest machines and the host.
• Private: The private switch is used to create network connection between virtual machines only.

Connect Hyper-v Machines to Internet Using External vSwitch

1. Create an external virtual switch in Hyper-v and then link it to the physical host network card. To create a virtual switch, open Hyper-v Manager then clicks Action and click Virtual Switches Manager.

2. From Virtual Switch Manager, select External virtual switch and click Create Virtual Switch.

3. Type a name for this virtual switch and select the exact physical network card which currently connects your host to the internet then click OK to apply the changes.

4. Now, to connect a virtual machine to the internet just select this external virtual switch as network adapter of the virtual machine.  Let’s test it on a Windows 10 Pro.

5. Run a virtual machine then click File and click Settings then select Network Adapter from Virtual Machine Settings. From right side select the external virtual switch as the virtual switch to connect hyper-v machines to internet.

The virtual machine is successfully connected to the internet through the external virtual switch.

Connect Hyper-v Machines to Internet Using ICS

The second method is using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS is another best practice to connect Hyper-v Machines to the internet. But in this method, you must share the original internet connection for virtual machines. So with ICS, you can connect your all private network machines to the internet. Let’s do it.

The process is the same as creating an external virtual switch. Open the Virtual Switch Manager and create a new one. Only select Internal instead of external the click OK to create the Internal virtual switch.

Enable ICS to Host Machine

1. Type “ncpa.cpl” to Windows Run and press enter to go to network connections of your host machine. Then right-click the Ethernet connection which is connected to the internet then click Properties.

2. On the Ethernet Properties page click Sharing tab then tick the checkbox of Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection then click OK to apply the changes.

3. Now for your virtual machines, you should choose Internal vSwitch as a virtual switch to connect them to the internet.

Yes, it works fine.

In the environment where your internet connection is a Wi-Fi connection, you can use the second method ICS to connect Hyper-v machines to the internet.

Install Ubuntu Desktop on Hyper-v

Before installing Ubuntu, Install Hyper-v feature on your Windows 10 or Windows Server. Then create a new virtual machine in Hyper-v and start the installation of Ubuntu desktop on Hyper-v virtual machine.

1. From the Hyper-v Manager console run the Ubuntu Linux virtual machine and click the Start to run the virtual machine.

2. On the welcome page select your language and click Install Ubuntu button. The chosen language is going to be your default operating system language. So try to choose the correct language.

3. Click Continue on the preparing to install Ubuntu desktop. Don’t pick the Install this third-party software if they are not required.

4. Select Erase disk and install Ubuntu and click Install Now to begin the installation.

Note: this option will remove the entire disk and create a new partition in order to install the operating system. So be careful when you want to install a dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu Linux installation.

If you need to create more partitions, then choose something else and continue to create more partitions.

5. When you click the Install now button, it prompts that do you write the changes to disk? Click Continue to accept and apply the partition changes.

6. When ask you where are you? Just select your location and click Continue.

7. Choose the language and keyboard layout and click Continue. This language will be the standard language for the keyboard. You can change the keyboard language later also.

8. To create a user account, type your name, computer name, username and password then click Continue to begin the installation.

9. Do nothing, let the Ubuntu installation process will finish successfully. When the installation has completed, then click Restart Now to restart the virtual machine.

10. Now on the login page type the password and login to Ubuntu desktop virtual machine.

Finally, welcome to the Linux Ubuntu desktop as Hyper-v virtual machine in Windows 10.

The Hyper-V beginner is a practical guide to a virtualization environment with Hyper-v in Windows client and Windows Server. The Hyper-v role enables you to create and manage a virtualized computing environment by using virtualization technology (VT) that is built into Windows Server 2008 to 2022 and Windows 8 to Windows 11. In this article, we are Installing Hyper-v in Windows client and Server. But the installation is the same on all Windows clients and servers that support Hyper-v as virtualization software.

The Management Tools for the Hyper-V Role consists of:

• GUI-based management tools: Hyper-V Manager, a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, and Virtual Machine Connection, which provides access to the video output of a virtual machine so you can interact with the virtual machine.
• Hyper-V-specific cmdlets for Windows PowerShell. Windows Server 2012 includes a Hyper-V module, which provides command-line access to all the functionality available in the GUI, as well as functionality not available through the GUI. For more information about the Hyper-V module, see the Hyper-V Module for Windows PowerShell.

Hardware requirements:

• Hyper-V requires a 64-bit processor that includes the following
• Hardware-assisted virtualization. This is available in processors that include a virtualization option—specifical processors with Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) technology.
• Hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP) must be available and enabled. Specifically, you must enable Intel XD bit (execute disable bit) or AMD NX bit (no execute bit).

Practical Guide to Virtualization: Installing Hyper-v

The installation of Hyper-v is easy, you can do the installation with PowerShell command line and graphical wizard also. But before installing Hyper-v on Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, you must enable VT technology from your system BIOS.

1. On Windows 8.1 or 10 press “Windows+R” to open the ‘Run” and type “Optionalfeatures” then press enter. This will open the Windows Features wizard.

2. Now, on the opened Windows features page select “Hyper-v” and two sub-features “Hyper-v Management Tools, Hyper-v Platform and click OK. When the installation has finished successfully, reboot the system.

Here is the Hyper-v on Windows 8.1.

2. Install Hyper-v on Windows Server 2012 R2

Installing Hyper-v on Windows Server 2012 R2 will do from Server Manager. From the Server Manager dashboard, click Manage > Add  Role and Features then directly Server Roles.

Do nothing only click next to finish the installation. After installation once reboot the system.

You can install Hyper-v with PowerShell command on Windows Server with the “Add-WindowsFeature” command.

Add-WindowsFeature Hyper-V -IncludeManagementTools -Restart
