What is the Kali Linux username and password after installation? This is the question we received from our readers?

Note: Kali changed to a non-root user policy by default since the release of 2020.1.

This means:

• During the installation of amd64 and i386 images, it will prompt you for a standard user account to be created.
• Any default operating system credentials used during Live Boot, or pre-created VMware and ARM images will be:
• • User: kali
  • Password: kali
• Vagrant image (based on their policy):
  • Username: vagrant
  • Password: vagrant

But for the old version of Kali Linux default user name is “root” and password is “toor”.

Default Tool Credentials

Some tools shipped with Kali, will use their own default hardcoded credentials (others will generate a new password the first time its used). The following tools have the default values:

• BeEF-XSS
  • Username: beef
  • Password: beef
  • Configuration File: /etc/beef-xss/config.yaml
• MySQL
  • User: root
  • Password: (blank)
  • Setup Program: mysql_secure_installation
• OpenVAS
  • Username: admin

File sharing in a Windows networked machines is simple. But sharing file between Kali Linux and Windows has a bit complicated process. You need to know both Linux and Windows file sharing protocols and utilities to share file between Kali Linux and Windows 10. Previously, we wrote many articles about sharing files between different operating system. Here we completely focus an easy way to share file between Kali Linux and Windows 10.

The process to Share file between Kali Linux and Windows.

1. Check network connectivity.
2. Enable Windows File Sharing.
3. Create a Share folder in Windows.
4. Configure Kali Linux File Sharing.
5. Install “cifs-utils” for mounting the shared folder in Linux.
6. Access Windows shared folder from Linux.
7. Sharing file between Linux and Windows.

Share File between Kali Linux and Windows 10

Do all the process of above list to enable file sharing between Kali Linux and Windows 10. Before starting the file sharing, make sure your Windows and Linux machine are works properly.

Note: Here I just explain some important commands. All the process are explained clearly in the video at the end of this post.

1. Check Network Connectivity

Checking network connectivity with “ipconfig” command in Windows and “ifconfig” command in Kali Linux. Your computer must be on the same network.

The “ipconfig” command shows IP address configuration of Windows operating system. And the “ifconfig” command shows the Linux IP address and network configuration.

2. Enable Windows File Sharing.

I don’t want to explain it again. You can check the process of enabling file sharing in Windows 10 on the above network Linux and Windows article. From advanced sharing settings of Windows, expand All Networks and turn on public file sharing and disable password protection option then click Save Changes.

Do the step 3 create a folder and share it for file sharing. This folder will be accessible from Linux.

5. Install “cifs-utils” for mounting the shared folder in Linux.

The CIFS filesystem is the preferred method for mounting SMB/CIFS shares on Linux. The in-kernel CIFS filesystem relies on a set of user-space tools. That package of tools is called cifs-utils. Although not really part of Samba proper, these tools were originally part of the Samba package.

To install “cifs-utils” type “apt-get install cifs-utils” in termial.

6. Access Windows shared folder from Linux.

Finally, access the shared folder of Windows 10 from Kali Linux. Try to mount the shared folder with “mount.cifs“command. This will mount the shared folder to the Linux system.

Command details: 

• mount.cifs: is the command for mounting SMB/CIFS shares on Linux.
• //Win10: is the Windows 10 computer name. You can use the IP address as well.
• /SharedFiles: is the name of Windows 10 shared folder.
• /root: Kali Linux, root user.
• /Desktop: desktop directory of the Kali Linux, root user.
• /NetworkFiles: is the folder on the Kali Linux desktop for mounting shared files.
• -o user=shais: is the mount.cifs command option for specifying Windows user name and password.

The single most common causes of a broken Kali Linux installation are following unofficial advice, and particularly arbitrarily populating the system’s sources.List file with unofficial repositories. The following post aims to clarify what repositories should exist in sources.list, and when they should be used.

This repository is actually Debian’s Testing distribution with all the kali-specific packages (available in the kali-dev-only repository) force-injected with Kali packages taking precedence over the Debian packages. Sometimes when Testing changes, some Kali packages must be updated and this will not happen immediately. During this time, kali-dev is likely to be broken. This repository is where Kali developers push updated packages and is the basis used to create kali-rolling.

Fix Unable to Locate Package Update in Kali Linux

To fix the broken Kali Linux installation just change the repository source from sources.list file. Open the sources.list file with a text editor and replace with the below sources list.

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free
deb http://old.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
deb http://old.kali.org/kali moto main non-free contrib

1. Type “leafpad /etc/apt/sources.list” command in terminal to open the sources.list file with Leafpad text editor.
2. Clean the sources.list old contents.
3. Copy and paste all above list to the sources.list file.
4. Save the Kali Linux sources.list file and close it.
5. Clean the apt-get cached files with “apt-get clean” command.
6. Finally, type “apt-get update” command to start the update.

1. Boot your Kali system and let the GNU Grub page will appear.

2. On the GNU GRUB page selects the *Advanced options for Kali GNU/Linux option by down arrow key and pressing enter.

3. Now simply select the second Recovery mode option and press the E key to go to recovery mode of Kali Linux.

4. To modify it just change read-only mode (ro) to rw (write mode) and add init=/bin/bash like the below screenshot then press F10 to reboot the Kali Linux.

5. After rebooting the Kali Linux system, it will bring you the below screen to reset the Kali Linux password.

6. To reset the root password of the Kali Linux system, simply type “passwd root” and hit enter. Then type the new password twice for the root user. After successfully resetting Kali Linux’s lost password, you will see the success message*password update successfully*. The installation of Kali Linux is a bit difficult for new users. So in this article, we help you to install Kali Linux version 2.0 on VMWare. The Kali Linux is a Debian-derived Linux distribution designed for digital forensics and penetration testing.

The first thing you need to install VMware on your computer and create a Virtual Machine for Kali Linux then set up a Penetration Testing Lab.

How to Install Kali Linux On VMWare?

Now I assume that you have installed VMWare, created a virtual machine and the Kali Linux image downloaded successfully. So you are ready to install Kali Linux.

1. Open the VMWare and run the Kali Linux virtual machine to boot the Kali.

2. Select Graphical Install from Boot menu with arrow keys and press enter.

3. Choose your system language and click Continue or press enter.

4. Select your location for local page and click Continue.

5. Select American English from Configure the Keyboard page or what keyboard standard you are using then click Continue.

6. From the Configure the Network page, type your hostname and click Continue.

7. Leave the Domain name empty and click Continue if you don’t have a directory server.

8. Set a password for the root user and click Continue. Don’t forget the password. If you forgot the password read the Reset Kali Linux Password topic.

9. Select the time zone of your location from Configure the Clock page then click Continue.

10. On the Partition Disks page, select Guided-use entire disk then click Continue.

11. On the above screen do nothing and click Continue.

12. Select All files in one partition (recommended for new users) and then click Continue.

13. Select Finish partition and write changes to disk then click Continue to apply the changes for partitioning the hard disk.

14. Finally, select Yes the click Continue to implement the changes.

It takes time to finish the installation, so be patient and drink a cup of tea.  😉

15. For Configure the package manager selects No and click Continue.

16. Select Yes to install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk and click Continue.

17. On the Install, the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk page select /dev/sda then clicks Continue.

18. Finally, the installation has finished successfully. Click Continue.

The system will reboot and log in as root user and password you have entered.

The installation of Kali Linux VMWare tools in Kali v2.0 is easier than Installing VMWare Tools on Kali Linux v1. So let’s do it with the following method.

 Install Kali Linux VMWare Tools

Open the Kali Linux virtual machine on your lab and mount the Kali Linux VMWare Tools.

1. First of all, once run the “apt-get update” command to update Kali Linux.

2. Click VM tab of the virtual machine and then click Install VMWare Tools to mount VMWare drivers.

3. Open the mounted VMWare Tools and copy the “VMWare tools 10.0.0 tar gz” file to the desktop.

4. Try to right-click the file and extract it. Once the file extracted successfully, open the folder to see the contents.

5. This is the VMWare tools contents. We need the “vmware-install.pl” file to install the tools with the terminal.

6. Now the VMware tools file is ready for installation. Just open the terminal and run the below command.

./Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib/vmware-install.pl -d 

The Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib is the directory where the vmware-install.pl file is located. So don’t confuse yourself with this command.  😀

7. When the installation has completed successfully, reboot the system to apply the changes.

How to Install VMware Tools in Kali Linux? Kali Linux is most commonly used inside of VMware Work Station and Player, one of the best virtual machine manager program for Penetration Tester and Network Administrators that creating the testing Lab. For Kali Linux WMware is better then the other Virtualization software. It has the ability to drag and drop files directly to virtual machine and using PnP devices with out any problems. These functions are not work correctly until you have install the VMware tools or drivers on Kali Linux.

So this is about How to install VMware tools and integrate the Kali Linux virtual machine with the host Windows 8.x or another Windows operating system. To install Kali Linux read “How to Install Dual Boot Windows and Kali Linux?” if you don’t know the installation.

While you are loges in as root user to Kali Linux, mount the VMware tools to Kali Linux and extract it.

The VMware tools auto open the contents of VMware tools. You can see all VMware tools contents.

The file coped successfully. Now try to extract the file with tar command line extractors tool.

root@Technig:~/Desktop# tar -xf VMwareTools-9.9.0-2304977.tar.gz
root@Technig:~/Desktop# ls

The task accomplished and go to VMware-tools-distro folder and run the install.pl file.

root@Technig:~/Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib# ls

When the installer launch, it will be asked some yes/no questions during the installation about what features you want to install, answer all these questions however you want.

After the installation has completed successfully, once restart the Kali machine to start using the new added options that VMware tools allows you.

Installing a dual boot windows and Kali Linux operating system beside each other in a PC is not appealing much for Windows. But you must do it carefully, maybe you will lose all your hard disk data and information.

To do a dual boot windows and Kali Linux you must have a Kali Linux DVD or a Bootable USB flash drive. In order to create a boot-able USB read the article how to create a Kali Linux  Bootable USB. This will help you simply download Kali Linux and create a boot able USB flash. Next prepare your system hard disk to host a Linux by shrinking the existing drive or use empty ones.

So everything is ready to boot your system with Kali boot-able USB and see the bellow screen.

Now select install and press enter to start installation of Kali.

Select the language and press enter. You can leave it by default as well but better to set you specific location.

In this page select the keyboard you want and press enter.

In the configure the network page, set a host name for Kali Linux or leave it by default kali and press enter.

Next page in domain name don’t type anything, leave empty and press enter.

For set up users and passwords, set a password for root user and press enter.

Just retype the password again and press enter.

In configure the clock page, select the location for system time.

In the Partition disks page select Guided – use the largest continuous free space and press enter

Be careful!. Don’t select entire disk options, these will remove all your hard disk data and recreate the partitions for Linux.

If the Guided – use the largest continuous free space doesn’t work or you faced with some installation error issue, select Manual and create the partitions manually.

Now select Separate /home partition and press enter.This will create tow partition, one for system files another for users profile.

Finally select Finish partitioning and write changes to disk and press enter.

Select Yes by Tab button to accept bring changes to hard disk and press enter.

Now partitions has been created and system will install the Kali Linux.

It takes time to install but don’t do anything. Let the installation process complete successfully.

When ask you to Configure the package manager select No and press enter.

In the Install the boot loader on a hard disk page select Yes and press enter.

Now in the Finish the installation page select Continue and press enter.

Finally the installation has finished successfully, you can log in with root user.

Welcome to Kali Linux.

When you restart your PC, you will see the Linux boot manager with windows boot option.

A Bootable Kali Linux USB flash drive will help you to run the Linux every where like PC, Mac and Linux.

In this article we learn how to create a live boot-able USB for Kali Linux the the hackers and Penetration tester Operating System. To do so, first you must download Universal USB Installer from here  and continue like bellow instruction to completely create a boot-able USB.

1. Run the Universal USB Installer as administrator and click I Agree button.

Now according to screenshot, select Kali Linux from step 1 and select the image of Kali Linux from step 2. This is the Image that you have downloaded before. If you don’t have the Kali Linux IOS image yet, download the latest version from here.

In step 3 select you USB flash drive. Be careful your USB will format, backup your date of USB drive before continue! Tick the we will format D:\Drive as Fat32 and click Create.

Now you will see a warning about formatting your flash drive, just click Yes to accept it.

This will take a few minutes to extract the from hard disk to USB drive.

When the installation has compete, close the window.

To boot you system with this USB go to your system BIOS and set the boot option to USB then save the settings and reboot the system.
