There are two common versions of IP: IPV4 and IPV6. The IPV4 has four hexadecimal numbers separated with a dot or period (.), such as 192.168.1.1, while IPV6 has six hexadecimal numbers separated with a colon (:). You are going to learn how to set IPV4 on Windows 11.

Setting IPV4 using Command Prompt

To set the static IP address via the CMD, which is an easy and quick way, go with the following steps:

1. Search the Command Prompt or CMD in the Search Box or the Start Manu and run it as administrator.
2. Before you start setting the static IP address, you must see the current configuration of your network because you will need some of that information later. Write in the command prompt IPConfig /all and enter.

 How to Set the Static IP graphically?

You can set the IP address graphically in two ways (methods):

First Method: System Settings

1. Right-click on the network icon on the taskbar and click on the Network and Internet Settings.
2. In the settings window, click on Properties.

3. You see an Edit button in front of the IP assignment; click on it, and in a new tiny window, open the top-down menu and select the Manual and turn on the IPv4 or IPv6 accordingly. (Here I go with the IPv4)

4. In the new windows, Enter the desired IP address and subnet mask (be careful, the IP address should not be in the scope of the DHCP server). Additionally, there you should enter the Gateway and Preferred DNS as well. The gateway address must be the same as the IP address of your ISP. And the DNS can be the address of any related DNS server; people mostly use the Google DNS Server address, which is 8.8.8.8

5. After you have entered all the required addresses, click Save. The internet connection of your computer will be down for a short time and will reconnect soon.

Second Method: Control Panel

The second way to set a static IP address on Windows 11 is through Control Panel.

1. Search and open Control Panel, click on the Network and Internet, and click on the Network and Sharing Center.
2. In-Network and Sharing Center window, click on Connections Wi-Fi, and in the Wi-Fi or Network Status window, click on the Properties, find Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and double click on it.

3. Check to Use the Following IP address and enter the desired IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Then click on the Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the preferred DNS server address.

1. Press Windows and type “PowerShell” and open the Windows PowerShell. Now type “ipconfig.” The IP config command shows the current system IP address. Here my computer IP address is 200.100.10.2 with the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and default gateway of 200.100.10.1.

2. To reset your system, IP address just types “ipconfig /release” and press enter. The /release option of ipconfig command will remove the current IP address. When the “ipconfig /release” command process has finished, type “ipconfig /renew” to obtains a new IP address from DHCP server.

Yes, the output result of ipconfig /release shows that the current IP address removed. Now the system doesn’t have an IP address, and it is ready to obtain a new IP address from DHCP server.

3. To get a fresh new IP address, just type “ipconfig /renew.” The /renew option of ipconfig command request a fresh new IP address from the DHCP server.

That’s good. The output result’s of ipconfig /renew shows that the system obtains a new IP address from the DHCP server.

IPConfig Command Structure:

3. Now type “ipconfig” to show the IP address.

The “ipconfig” command shows everything about your computer network interfaces. You might have many physical or virtual network interface card.

Here, I just have one network interface on my Windows 10 computer. The result of ipconfig command shows that the IP 169.254.29.130 with the mask of 255.255.255.0 is my current Windows IP address.

This is a class C “autoconfiguration IPv4”. When your system doesn’t find any DHCP Server or manual IP address, it obtains auto IP address. So let’s change it.

How to Change IP Address with Command Prompt?

For change IP address, open command prompt or PowerShell. Both works the same and you can run all command prompt commends on Powershell as well. Ok, run cmd or Powershell as administrator. Netsh work in both command prompt and Powershell. I’m using Windows Powershell to change IP address on Windows 10 completely. Becuase the user interface and color’s of Powershell is better than Command prompt.

1. Type “Powershell” in Windows 10 search box to run Windows Powershell.
2. You need to run Powershell as administrator. Just press Windows+Shift the press enter to run Powershell as administrator. Or right-click the Powershell and click Run as administrator.

To find the network interface with the command line, type the following command on Powershell.

Netsh interface ipv4 show interface

The result shows two network interfaces. The Loopback and the Ethernet. The Loopback is Windows builtin network loopback interface, but our pointed network interface is the ethernet.

To find your IP address in Windows 10 with netsh command, just type the following command.

netsh interface ipv4 show config

It displays all the network interface configuration. The output result is clear and better than output result of “ipconfig” command on Command prompt. So to find an exact information of the network interface, just add the index ID of the network interface at the end of the command.

netsh interface ipv4 show config 2

That’s good. Let’s configure and change Windows 10 IP address with the command line. The command is bit long but easy to understand. No need to remember, just try to understand the netsh command structure.

To change the IP address of the “Ethernet0” network interface, type the following command.

netsh interface ipv4 set address name=2 static 200.100.10.5 mask=255.255.255.0 gateway=200.100.10.1

Once the command executed successfully, check the result with “netsh interface ipv4 show config 2” command. Yes, the output result shows the exact IP address has set on the “Ethernet0” network interface. Now the Windows IP address is 200.100.10.5 with the mask of 255.255.255.0 and default gateway is 200.100.10.1.

Note: You can’t change the default gateway separately with the following command. It will remove the IP address and just set the default gateway address.

netsh interface ipv4 set address name=2 gateway= (Gateway IP Address)

How to Change DNS IP address from Command Prompt?

DNS IP address is the unique address in the network that resolves computer name to IP address and IP address to the computer name. In the network, finding a computer with a name is easy than 32-bit IPv4 address. To set or change the DNS IP address, just simply do it with the following command.

netsh interface ipv4 set dns name=2 static 200.100.10.30

You might see some error on a simple local network, because of not having a DNS server. When you don’t have a DNS server, it’s not necessary to set DNS IP address on your computer.

The step by step guide to install and configure DHCP Server in Windows Server 2012 R2. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is the core networking protocol to deploy Internet Protocol (IP) address automatically for network clients. In a small to medium and large networks, the IP address deployment has performed by DHCP Server. A DHCP Server assigns IP addresses to client computers and reduces IP management tasks.The DHCP protocol is available on most used Wireless Access point devices with preconfiguring of basic DHCP services for home users.

But in the enterprise network, DHCP Server require installation and configuration. In Microsoft Windows Server it a role base service. You must install it first and configure to work correctly. So I don’t take about DHCP Server on Cisco routers now because this article is about DCHP installation and configuration of Windows Server 2012 R2. 

 1. Install and Configure DHCP Server Role

To install DHCP Serve go to Dashboard on Server Manager and click Manage then click Add Rules and Features.

In the Role installation window select Role-based or feature-based installation the click Next.

Choose the server you want to install DHCP from the Server pool. Here we have one server and select by default.

From the Roles list select DHCP Server. When the Add Roles and Features Wizard Page opened, click Add Features then Click Next. That will install required features for DHCP Server.

In the Features window, do not change anything, just click Next.

Once read the information about DHCP Server and click Next button.

In the Confirm Installation page, select Restart the destination server automatically if required. Click Yes the warning window and click Install.

The installation will take a minute,when it has completed successfully click Complete DHCP Configuration link.

Read DHCP Post-Install configuration wizard description and click Next.

Set the appropriate user for management of DHCP Server. Here I leave it by default because the administrator (Shais) has the right privilege to perform DHCP Server configuration.

On the DHCP summary window clicks Close and close the DHCP Installation page also.

2. Configure DHCP Server and Create Scope

Now try to set up the installed DHCP server and create Scope to lease IP address for clients.

Type dhcpmgmt.msc in Windows Run and press enter to open DHCP management console.

On DHCP console window expends the domain name and IPv4.  Right, click the IPv4 the click New Scope.

Click Next on the New Scope Wizard page.

In the Scope, name defines the name of Scope and write any description then click Next.

Assign the start IP address range and the end IP address range. I have set from 192.168.100.1 to 192.168.100.254 which is a class C IP address. Leave the length 24 by default and click Next.

Add the exclusive range prevent them from leasing to the client by DHCP Server. The IP address range which reserved is use for Network Servers and popular workstation. Here I add 192.168.100.1 to 192.168.100.15.  Just set the IP address and click Add button then click Next.

Let the Lease Duration by default and click Next.

Only click Next the Configure DHCP Options, and Yes, I want to configure these options now must be checked.

If you have a router in your network, set the router IP address and click Add button, then click Next.

Type your domain name, and it’s IP address then click Next.

Do nothing for WINS Servers, because we don’t use WINS Server ether. Just click Next.

In Active Scope, windows click Next. Be sure the Yes, I want to active this scope now must check.

Finally, click Finish to close and finalize the installation of DHCP Server in Windows Server 2012 R2.

Now you can assign the IP address to your network clients automatically trough this DHCP Server.
