This Lab we are going to create is not only for Hacking and Penetration Testing. It’s the lab which is necessary for all computer science students and technology geeks.

A Lab within a computer reduce electricity usage and has many more benefits. Even you can create it within your personal Laptop. If it would be on a laptop, it is portable and you can carry everywhere with yourself. The time is gone when the hardware of a computer was weak and just could run an operating system with a few software. But nowadays each computer at least has a CPU i3 or higher with 4 GB RAM or higher. So you can run multiple virtual operating systems (OS) separately at the same time.

Virtualization Tools To Set Up A Penetration Testing Lab

There are many Virtualization software for this purpose and all of them are easy to install and using a virtualization environment. Hyper-v,  a free and built-in hypervisor software on Windows 8 higher. It’s the best and I like it too much, but for enterprise network and working with Microsoft software products. Like SQL Server, Windows Server, System Center,  and others.

When we are using for multi-vendor products, Linux, Windows, Mac OS, Chrome OS, Router IOS, and Web Server and web Apps, we must install and test them on Lab that can support all of them. So from basic hacking a standalone PC to Wireless hacking and even web app penetration testing to enterprise network penetration testing I suggest to create your lab with VMWare.

VMWare workstation is the appropriate tool for setting up your penetration testing lab and networking training lab. Unfortunately, it is not free like Hyper-V. But you can use VMWare player for free which is not more flexible and doesn’t have the same functions as a workstation.

So good, you completely understand which Virtualization software is preferable and flexible for Learning Penetration Testing and Hacking. Now try to create your lab. First of all download all software you need for testing. Windows Server, Windows Client, Linux Operating system, and Web Application penetrating testing.

Install VMware as Virtual Host Server

Now go to VMware website and download the VMware workstation. Download the Windows edition if you are using Windows. It has for Linux and Mac OS also.  When the download complete successfully, simply install it like simple software installation and create a new virtual machine according to this step by step article ” How to Create A Virtual Machine in VMWare?“.

Note: Your system must meet the virtualization requirement. It must support virtualization technology (VT) and enabled before installing any virtualization software. You can enable it through your system BIOS where you can find other settings also.

The first option is using Android Studio that works better for Android developers. The second is to install Android Oreo on VMware or VirtualBox virtualized software. How to Install Android Oreo on VMware?

Installing an operating system on a virtualized environment is like installing an operating system on a real computer. Just download the Vmware or VirtualBox virtualization software and install it on your computer.

1. Download VMware or VirtualBox.
2. Install it on your computer.
3. Create a Virtual Machine for Android Oreo.
4. Boot the Android Oreo.
5. Continue the step by step to install Android Oreo on VMware or VirtualBox.
6. Finally, restart the Android virtual machine see Android on your computer.

Note: Currently there is no Android Oreo image is available for VMware. But Google will release the Android Oreo Image for VMware and VirtualBox in the coming months.

In Hyper-v you can connect Hyper-v machines to Internet with two methods that I’m going to explain all step by step. This article is for those, who know the basic of Server Virtualization with Hyper-v. If you don’t know about Hyper-v Virtualization software, I recommend you to read the previews articles of Hyper-V installation and configuration posts.

• Install Hyper-V: Hyper-v Beginner: A Practical Guide to Virtualization. This post shows you how to install Hyper-v on Windows client 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2016.
• Configure the necessary Hyper-V settings: Essential Hyper-V Configuration. Explain the configuration of Hyper-v for beginner to create a virtualization testing Lab.

Hyper-v Virtual Switches

The virtual switch is a logical switch which connects virtual machines. Currently, Hyper-v has three different types of virtual switch which I told the preview article also.

• External: Switch is used to connect the virtual machines to external network and Internet. The virtual machines (Guest) and Host will be on the same network.
• Internal: Switch is used to create network connection between guest machines and the host.
• Private: The private switch is used to create network connection between virtual machines only.

Connect Hyper-v Machines to Internet Using External vSwitch

1. Create an external virtual switch in Hyper-v and then link it to the physical host network card. To create a virtual switch, open Hyper-v Manager then clicks Action and click Virtual Switches Manager.

2. From Virtual Switch Manager, select External virtual switch and click Create Virtual Switch.

3. Type a name for this virtual switch and select the exact physical network card which currently connects your host to the internet then click OK to apply the changes.

4. Now, to connect a virtual machine to the internet just select this external virtual switch as network adapter of the virtual machine.  Let’s test it on a Windows 10 Pro.

5. Run a virtual machine then click File and click Settings then select Network Adapter from Virtual Machine Settings. From right side select the external virtual switch as the virtual switch to connect hyper-v machines to internet.

The virtual machine is successfully connected to the internet through the external virtual switch.

Connect Hyper-v Machines to Internet Using ICS

The second method is using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS is another best practice to connect Hyper-v Machines to the internet. But in this method, you must share the original internet connection for virtual machines. So with ICS, you can connect your all private network machines to the internet. Let’s do it.

The process is the same as creating an external virtual switch. Open the Virtual Switch Manager and create a new one. Only select Internal instead of external the click OK to create the Internal virtual switch.

Enable ICS to Host Machine

1. Type “ncpa.cpl” to Windows Run and press enter to go to network connections of your host machine. Then right-click the Ethernet connection which is connected to the internet then click Properties.

2. On the Ethernet Properties page click Sharing tab then tick the checkbox of Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection then click OK to apply the changes.

3. Now for your virtual machines, you should choose Internal vSwitch as a virtual switch to connect them to the internet.

Yes, it works fine.

In the environment where your internet connection is a Wi-Fi connection, you can use the second method ICS to connect Hyper-v machines to the internet.

The installation of Kali Linux is a bit difficult for new users. So in this article, we help you to install Kali Linux version 2.0 on VMWare. The Kali Linux is a Debian-derived Linux distribution designed for digital forensics and penetration testing.

The first thing you need to install VMware on your computer and create a Virtual Machine for Kali Linux then set up a Penetration Testing Lab.

• How to Create Virtual Machine on VMWare?

The second step is to download the latest version of Kali Linux for you Pentest Lab.

• Download Kali Linux 

How to Install Kali Linux On VMWare?

Now I assume that you have installed VMWare, created a virtual machine and the Kali Linux image downloaded successfully. So you are ready to install Kali Linux.

1. Open the VMWare and run the Kali Linux virtual machine to boot the Kali.

2. Select Graphical Install from Boot menu with arrow keys and press enter.

3. Choose your system language and click Continue or press enter.

4. Select your location for local page and click Continue.

5. Select American English from Configure the Keyboard page or what keyboard standard you are using then click Continue.

6. From the Configure the Network page, type your hostname and click Continue.

7. Leave the Domain name empty and click Continue if you don’t have a directory server.

8. Set a password for the root user and click Continue. Don’t forget the password. If you forgot the password read the Reset Kali Linux Password topic.

9. Select the time zone of your location from Configure the Clock page then click Continue.

10. On the Partition Disks page, select Guided-use entire disk then click Continue.

11. On the above screen do nothing and click Continue.

12. Select All files in one partition (recommended for new users) and then click Continue.

13. Select Finish partition and write changes to disk then click Continue to apply the changes for partitioning the hard disk.

14. Finally, select Yes the click Continue to implement the changes.

It takes time to finish the installation, so be patient and drink a cup of tea.  😉

15. For Configure the package manager selects No and click Continue.

16. Select Yes to install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk and click Continue.

17. On the Install, the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk page select /dev/sda then clicks Continue.

18. Finally, the installation has finished successfully. Click Continue.

The system will reboot and log in as root user and password you have entered.

The essential Hyper-V configuration article is related to preview “Hyper-v Beginner: A Practical Guide to Virtualization” articles. But in this paper, we will do the initial Hyper-V configuration for our Virtualization Lab in Windows 8.1, 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2 and Server 2016.

Essential Hyper-V Configuration

Let’s start the essential Hyper-v configuration in Windows 8.1. All configuration is same on all Windows, but some options differ between Windows client and Server.

Open the installed Hyper-v using Windows search and pin it to the taskbar for quick access to hyper-v Manager console.

You see the hyper-v manager. There is no guest operating system installed yet. Before installing operating systems and start working, we should do configure some basic settings.

1. Change Default Virtual Machine Directory

By default, Hyper-v keeps installed operating systems on Windows drive, and that is not a good practice. You should modify the default directory. Because if you lose your Windows directory, you still must have the guests operating systems and that is also a good practice to keep separate Windows and System files from other files.

To change directory, click Action then click  Hyper-v Settings or from the right side of Hyper-v Manager click Hyper-V Settings. 

On the Hyper-v Settings page click Browse and select the directory where you want to keep virtual machines hard disks and configuration files.

2. Create Virtual Switch

Virtual Switch in Hyper-v will let you join computers and create a network.

There are 3 type of virtual switch in Hyper-v  Private, Internal and External

• External: Create a switch that allows the Hyper-v guests directory connect to the Internet with your host physical Network Interface Card (NIC).
• Internal: With this type of virtual switch, you can internetwork host with guests machines. You can directly transfer files between virtual machines and the host system.
• Private: Create a private and isolated network which mostly using for testing Lab.

So let’s create a private virtual switch. From Hyper-v Manager page click Action then click Virtual Switch Manager.

On the Virtual Switch Manager page select Private and click Create Virtual Switch button.

Now type the name and description whatever you want then click OK to create the new private switch. See the result, and you must have the newly created Virtual Switch.

Creating Internal virtual switch is the same as a private virtual switch, but you must select internal from the connection type.

To create an External virtual switch, you must select the physical network card from connection type. See the screenshot.

So that is enough for essential Hyper-v configuration. Now try to learn how to create a virtual machine on hyper-v?

3 Creating Virtual Machine on Hyper-V

Now the Hyper-v installed and ready to use for virtualization. So try to create some virtual machines to create your testing Lab.

To create a virtual machine click on the Action > New and Virtual Machine or just click New on the right side of Hyper-v Manager.

On the Before You Begin page read the information and click Next.  If don’t want to see this page again, check the Do not show this page again. 

On Specify Name and Location page, type a name for the new virtual machine according to the operating system you want to install. And specify the location, where you want to keep the virtual machine files, then click Next.

Leave generation 1 selected by default on Specify Generation page and click Next.

Assign the appropriate memory for your new system and then click Next. Here I have assign 2 GB RAM for a Windows 10 virtual machine.

Select one of the virtual switches which we had created previously at virtual switch manager section of this article. When you choose a virtual Switch, click Next.  Remember, you can add more virtual switch later for your virtual machine. But at the time of creating a new virtual machine, you only allow selecting one virtual switch.

Specify the site of hard disk for a new computer. By default, hyper-v set 127 GB dynamic hard disk for a Windows machine.  For now, leave the default and click Next.

On the Installation Options page, select Install an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM, then select the Image file (.sio) and Browse to the directory of Operating system image. Choose the image of windows you want to install it and then click Next. I have selected Windows 10 image.

On the Completing the New Virtual Machine Wizard page click Finish to finalise the process. 

Here is the newly created Windows 10 Pro for essential Hyper-v configuration. Now you completely know how to build a virtual machine. Create as much as a virtual machine you need for your Lab.

4. Import an Old Virtual Machine to Hyper-V

Sometimes you have a Virtual machine from the preview Hyper-v or transferred from other Hyper-v Server. Now try to import it into a new Hyper-v Server.

To import a machine click, Action then clicks Import Virtual Machine. 

On the Import Virtual Machine page browse and select the folder of the virtual machine. Only select the folder which contains the virtual machine hard disks and configuration files and then click Next.

Select the virtual machine and click Next.

On the Choose Import, Type page select Register the virtual machine in-place (use the existing unique ID) and click Next. 

Select the location of the Virtual Hard disk and click Next to go to the summary page and click Finish.

You may want to re-install Hyper-v server or Windows 10 that Hyper-v installed. But the Hyper-v virtual machines need to be remain. After installing new Hype-v Server, are able to import virtual machine to Hyper v server without installing new virtual machine.

Just do not delete all Hyper-v virtual machines when you reinstall Hyper-v server. Allwasy keep the hyper-v virtual machines on a separate drive. Never store virtual machines on operating system drive. Because when you want to change operating system, the Hyper-v will removed and the virtual machines with configuration will be remains. Next time you can simply import virtual machine to hyper-v server.

Import Virtual Machine to Hyper v Server

I have many virtual machines from preview Hyper-v. Now I want to import them to my new Hyper-v server. If you have the same case like, so install Hyper-v on new operating system and configure Hyper-v to get ready to host your virtual machines.

This article works on Hyper-v 2008 R2 server to Hyper-v server 2016. Just follow the same steps to import virtual machine to hyper-v server. If hyper v import virtual machine required permissions are missing, comment us the alert messages to help you.

1. Open Hyper-v manager on Windows 10 or Windows server. Right click on Server name and select Import virtual machine to hyper-v.

2. On the Before You Begin page, tick the Do not show this page again and click Next.

3. On Locate Folder window, click Browse and select the exact folder of a virtual machine. It’s important to choose the exact and right folder of the virtual machine you want to import on Hyper-v. If the directory will not be correct, it issue some errors relevant to incorrect virtual machine directory.

4. Select virtual machine and click Next. When you have more than one virtual machine files in a folder, it will shows both virtual machines. You should select one and import them one by one.

5. Simply select Register the virtual machines in-place (use the existing unique ID) and click Next.

6. Select network card for virtual machine and click Next. If you don’t create Hyper-v virtual switch yet, create a new virtual switch from Hyper-v Manager. I have created a private network virtual switch for my virtual machines.

7. On the Summary page, read the summary information and click Finish to complete the task.

8. Finally, check the imported virtual machines on Hyper-v Manager. The virtual machines are imported with all checkpoints or snapshots.

That’s all how to import virtual machines to hyper v server. You can import these virtual machines even into another Hyper-v server. Just transfer virtual machines to other hyper-v server.

The Hyper-V beginner is a practical guide to a virtualization environment with Hyper-v in Windows client and Windows Server. The Hyper-v role enables you to create and manage a virtualized computing environment by using virtualization technology (VT) that is built into Windows Server 2008 to 2022 and Windows 8 to Windows 11. In this article, we are Installing Hyper-v in Windows client and Server. But the installation is the same on all Windows clients and servers that support Hyper-v as virtualization software.

The Management Tools for the Hyper-V Role consists of:

• GUI-based management tools: Hyper-V Manager, a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, and Virtual Machine Connection, which provides access to the video output of a virtual machine so you can interact with the virtual machine.
• Hyper-V-specific cmdlets for Windows PowerShell. Windows Server 2012 includes a Hyper-V module, which provides command-line access to all the functionality available in the GUI, as well as functionality not available through the GUI. For more information about the Hyper-V module, see the Hyper-V Module for Windows PowerShell.

Hardware requirements:

• Hyper-V requires a 64-bit processor that includes the following
• Hardware-assisted virtualization. This is available in processors that include a virtualization option—specifical processors with Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) technology.
• Hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP) must be available and enabled. Specifically, you must enable Intel XD bit (execute disable bit) or AMD NX bit (no execute bit).

Practical Guide to Virtualization: Installing Hyper-v

The installation of Hyper-v is easy, you can do the installation with PowerShell command line and graphical wizard also. But before installing Hyper-v on Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, you must enable VT technology from your system BIOS.

1. On Windows 8.1 or 10 press “Windows+R” to open the ‘Run” and type “Optionalfeatures” then press enter. This will open the Windows Features wizard.

2. Now, on the opened Windows features page select “Hyper-v” and two sub-features “Hyper-v Management Tools, Hyper-v Platform and click OK. When the installation has finished successfully, reboot the system.

Here is the Hyper-v on Windows 8.1.

2. Install Hyper-v on Windows Server 2012 R2

Installing Hyper-v on Windows Server 2012 R2 will do from Server Manager. From the Server Manager dashboard, click Manage > Add  Role and Features then directly Server Roles.

Do nothing only click next to finish the installation. After installation once reboot the system.

You can install Hyper-v with PowerShell command on Windows Server with the “Add-WindowsFeature” command.

Add-WindowsFeature Hyper-V -IncludeManagementTools -Restart

Done successfully the Hyper-v beginner a practical guide to virtualization.

Let’s Create a virtual Machine in VMWare. In the previews article we talk about choosing a software for Virtualization and training lab. You can read the article form “Set Up A Penetration Testing Lab for Hackers“.  But know we must configure our lab, installing software and Operating system. Before all we need to create a virtual machine.

A virtual machine is the real simulated machine which let us install an operating system, like Linux, Windows or Mac OS. Later we can connect virtual machines with each other, in order to create a Local Area Network (LAN). For those who are familiar with such an environment, configuring and manipulating of these software are easy, but for newbies it is a bit difficult.

Create A Virtual Machine in VMWare

I assume that you have download and installed VMWare on your computer successfully and ready for first step creating a new virtual machine. Open the VMWare and click Create a New Virtual Machine.

If the home page is not opened, click Go to Home Tab from Tabs menu.

Now on the New Virtual Machine Wizard page select typical (recommended) and click Next.  The typical will automatically  configure some prerequisite settings of a virtual machine.

On the Guest Operating System Installation page, click Browse and select the image’s of Operating system you need to install it. Here I have chosen Windows 10 for testing. I’m not going to install it, but if you want to learn the installation of Windows OS, read the article “Install Windows Server 2012 R2 Step by Step“. This is Windows Server 2012 R2, but the installation process is the same as Windows client.

So name the new virtual machine and select the location where you want to store the vhd and configuration files of the machine. It is important to create a new folder for each new virtual machine and keep it away from host system drive. Don? so click Next.

Now specify the disk capacity. By default 60 GB is selected for new machine, but you can decrees or increase it. 60 GB is recommended for Windows 10 x65 bit, for a Linux OS 10 to 20 GB is pretty enough and no need more if you don’t keep files. Don?    So Select Store virtual disk as single file and click Next.

Finally click Finish, the system will create then going to power on the machine. The new created machine will start the OS installation if the Power on this virtual machine after creation has been checked. So I don’t want to install it now.

The creating disk might take time while you are creating a new machine.

You see the new machine Windows 10 x64 on my Virtual lab. That’s it, click Power one this virtual machine to start your new machine and install OS.

You must create a few more machine in order to completely create a virtual machine. Each machine need space and RAM. To edit a machine settings, click Edit virtual machine settings or right click virtual machine and select Settings.

You can specify more RAM, Hard disk, Network card, and even processor.  You may need to install Kali Linux on VMware “How to Install Kali Linux on VMWare?” article.

How to Install VMware Tools in Kali Linux? Kali Linux is most commonly used inside of VMware Work Station and Player, one of the best virtual machine manager program for Penetration Tester and Network Administrators that creating the testing Lab. For Kali Linux WMware is better then the other Virtualization software. It has the ability to drag and drop files directly to virtual machine and using PnP devices with out any problems. These functions are not work correctly until you have install the VMware tools or drivers on Kali Linux.

So this is about How to install VMware tools and integrate the Kali Linux virtual machine with the host Windows 8.x or another Windows operating system. To install Kali Linux read “How to Install Dual Boot Windows and Kali Linux?” if you don’t know the installation.

While you are loges in as root user to Kali Linux, mount the VMware tools to Kali Linux and extract it.

The VMware tools auto open the contents of VMware tools. You can see all VMware tools contents.

Now copy the VMware Tools to the desktop with drag and drop or through command line. I using cp command to copy the file.

The file coped successfully. Now try to extract the file with tar command line extractors tool.

root@Technig:~/Desktop# tar -xf VMwareTools-9.9.0-2304977.tar.gz
root@Technig:~/Desktop# ls

The task accomplished and go to VMware-tools-distro folder and run the install.pl file.
