For IT lovers and Tech geeks, It’s time to Setup a Penetration Testing Lab to learn Information Security and testing some hacking tips for protecting our network or home computers from being hacked. This Lab we are going to create is not only for Hacking and Penetration Testing. It’s the lab which is necessary for all computer science students and technology geeks.

A Lab within a computer reduce electricity usage and has many more benefits. Even you can create it within your personal Laptop. If it would be on a laptop, it is portable and you can carry everywhere with yourself. The time is gone when the hardware of a computer was weak and just could run an operating system with a few software. But nowadays each computer at least has a CPU i3 or higher with 4 GB RAM or higher. So you can run multiple virtual operating systems (OS) separately at the same time.

Virtualization Tools To Set Up A Penetration Testing Lab

There are many Virtualization software for this purpose and all of them are easy to install and using a virtualization environment. Hyper-v,  a free and built-in hypervisor software on Windows 8 higher. It’s the best and I like it too much, but for enterprise network and working with Microsoft software products. Like SQL Server, Windows Server, System Center,  and others.

When we are using for multi-vendor products, Linux, Windows, Mac OS, Chrome OS, Router IOS, and Web Server and web Apps, we must install and test them on Lab that can support all of them. So from basic hacking a standalone PC to Wireless hacking and even web app penetration testing to enterprise network penetration testing I suggest to create your lab with VMWare.

VMWare workstation is the appropriate tool for setting up your penetration testing lab and networking training lab. Unfortunately, it is not free like Hyper-V. But you can use VMWare player for free which is not more flexible and doesn’t have the same functions as a workstation.

So good, you completely understand which Virtualization software is preferable and flexible for Learning Penetration Testing and Hacking. Now try to create your lab. First of all download all software you need for testing. Windows Server, Windows Client, Linux Operating system, and Web Application penetrating testing.

Install VMware as Virtual Host Server

Now go to VMware website and download the VMware workstation. Download the Windows edition if you are using Windows. It has for Linux and Mac OS also.  When the download complete successfully, simply install it like simple software installation and create a new virtual machine according to this step by step article ” How to Create A Virtual Machine in VMWare?“.

Note: Your system must meet the virtualization requirement. It must support virtualization technology (VT) and enabled before installing any virtualization software. You can enable it through your system BIOS where you can find other settings also.

The Linux Ubuntu Desktop comes with everything you need to run as client desktop. Install Ubuntu desktop in your organisation, school, home or enterprise network. All the essential applications, like an office suite, browsers, email and media apps come pre-installed, and thousands more games and applications are available in the Ubuntu software centre.

We are going to install Ubuntu desktop on Hyper-v using Windows 10. It is the best practice to test or using multiple operating systems on a computer. You need to Download Ubuntu Desktop image from Ubuntu website.

Before you Begin:

Before you start to install Ubuntu desktop on Hyper-v, you should know the basic knowledge of Hyper-v. If you are new with Hyper-v, read the following articles.

Install Ubuntu Desktop on Hyper-v

Before installing Ubuntu, Install Hyper-v feature on your Windows 10 or Windows Server. Then create a new virtual machine in Hyper-v and start the installation of Ubuntu desktop on Hyper-v virtual machine.

1. From the Hyper-v Manager console run the Ubuntu Linux virtual machine and click the Start to run the virtual machine.

2. On the welcome page select your language and click Install Ubuntu button. The chosen language is going to be your default operating system language. So try to choose the correct language.

3. Click Continue on the preparing to install Ubuntu desktop. Don’t pick the Install this third-party software if they are not required.

4. Select Erase disk and install Ubuntu and click Install Now to begin the installation.

Note: this option will remove the entire disk and create a new partition in order to install the operating system. So be careful when you want to install a dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu Linux installation.

If you need to create more partitions, then choose something else and continue to create more partitions.

5. When you click the Install now button, it prompts that do you write the changes to disk? Click Continue to accept and apply the partition changes.

6. When ask you where are you? Just select your location and click Continue.

7. Choose the language and keyboard layout and click Continue. This language will be the standard language for the keyboard. You can change the keyboard language later also.

8. To create a user account, type your name, computer name, username and password then click Continue to begin the installation.

9. Do nothing, let the Ubuntu installation process will finish successfully. When the installation has completed, then click Restart Now to restart the virtual machine.

10. Now on the login page type the password and login to Ubuntu desktop virtual machine.

Finally, welcome to the Linux Ubuntu desktop as Hyper-v virtual machine in Windows 10.

Log in to your Microsoft account and go to Virtual Lab: Getting to Know Windows Server 2012 R2 and click start then the log in page will open which ask you to log in with your Microsoft Account.

This Lab is compatible with Internet Explorer. So it’s better try it with IE. If ask do you let this app access your info? click Yes and click Lunch lab to start the Lab server.

When ask you whether you test Windows Client or Web Client? Click Windows Client

S small app name holSystems LaunchPad Online will be download and installed.

On the Application Run – Security Warning page click run.

When the installation has complete, the system may need to restart once. After restarting the system open the virtual lab page again and click launch lab and continue. It take a few minutes to prepare lab.
