Now I’m going to show you the essential GNS3 Configuration for Cisco training lab. It’s the exact Simulator which we can create a complete practical Lab for CCNA, CCNP and CCIE Certifications. By default there is no Router in GNS3, you must download Router IOS Image and add it to GNS3.

GNS3 Configuration for Beginners

So let’s start it. First run the installed GNS3, when it is opened, ask you to create a new project. Only type the name of new project and select the file location if you want to keep it in different location and click OK.

Now to add a router, click Edit form Menu then click Preference, in Preference page click on Dynamips twice and click IOS Routers, then click New button and browse for IOS Image and select IOS image, open it.

Click Yes when ask you would you like to decompress this IOS image?

When the decompressing is finished click next.

Click next and let the router named by default.

Now select memory for router and click next. Default is good but no enough RAM will prevent IOS to start.

Leave the network adapter slot by default for now and click next.

On the Idl-PC click finish.

Now you have add a router successfully.

For a complex network lab you must add some more router IOS and Firewall.

Router IOS is not provided freely by GNS3 Network Simulator, but  you must purchase or use your existing router IOS for GNS3 configuration and router configuration. Goolge can help you find some free router IOS.

This is a simple guide to configure RIPng on Cisco router using GNS3 for CCNP Exam or real word network routing. The Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a distance-vector routing protocol that uses hop count as a routing metric. RIP is an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) most commonly used in smaller networks. RIP for IPv6 also commonly referred as RIPng (Routing Information Protocol Next Generation) is designed to support IPv6 and functions the same way as RIP-v2 in IPv4. RIPng uses FF02::9 as the destination address for RIP update messages.

Configure RIPng on Cisco Router for CCNP Exam

Have you ever configured RIP on Cisco Router? If yes, you know the simplicity or RIP configuration for IPv4. Its simpler as RIP configuration to configure RIPng on Cisco Router or Switch. Just follow this simple step by step guide to configure RIPng using GNS3 or real Cisco Routers.

Le’s start it using the above RIPng on GNS3 CCNP Lab. Create your own lab within GNS3 and configure RIPng using GNS3.

1. Try to set IPv6 address to s4/0 and s4/1 on R1 router with the below IPv6 address. You can set IPv6 address on Loopback interfaces, but in this Lab, I’m doing on router serial interfaces.

R1#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R1(config)#ipv6 unicast-routing
R1(config)#interface s4/0
R1(config-if)#ipv6 address 2016::1/128
R1(config-if)#no shutdown
R1(config-if)#exit
R1(config)#
R1(config)#interface s4/1
R1(config-if)#ipv6 address 2010::1/128
R1(config-if)#no shutdown

2. Do the IPv6 configuration on R2 like the below configuration.

R2#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R2(config)#ipv6 unicast-routing
R2(config)#interface s4/0
R2(config-if)#ipv6 address 2010::2/128
R2(config-if)#no shutdown
R2(config-if)#exit

3. Now configure the R3 router also with the below IPv6 address.

R3#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R3(config)#ipv6 unicast-routing
R3(config)#interface s4/0
R3(config-if)#ipv6 address 2016::2/128
R3(config-if)#no shutdown
R3(config-if)#exit

The RIPng GNS3 CCNP Lab is ready to configure RIPng and enable routing on this network. Just do it with “IPv6 rip” command on serial interfaces.

4. Enable RIPng on all routers interfaces which we configure them with IPv6.

R1:

R1#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R1(config)#interface s4/0
R1(config-if)#ipv6 rip RIPngTest enable
R1(config-if)#exit

R1(config)#interface s4/1
R1(config-if)#ipv6 rip RIPngTest enable
R1(config-if)#exit

R2:

R2#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R2(config)#interface s4/0
R2(config-if)#ipv6 rip RIPngTest enable
R2(config-if)#exit

R3:

R3#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R3(config)#interface s4/0
R3(config-if)#ipv6 rip RIPngTest enable
R3(config-if)#exit

That’s all. The Lab is ready and RIPng routing is enabled on all routers. Now the routers can communicate with each other. Let’s test it.

Test RIPng connectivity with Ping IPv6

Simply test with ping command from R2 router to R3 router IPv6 address.

R2#ping ipv6 2016::1
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 2016::1, timeout is 2 seconds:

Yes, it ping and replied successfully from R2 to R3.

If you have more routers, try to configure them one by one and then test them. It’s better to test from PCs and switches also.

SuperPutty for GNS3 is one of the best Windows GUI Application that allows the PuTTY SSH Client to be open in multiple tabs. There are many tools for control devices in GNS3, but all of them has it’s own functions and good for basic users. 1. To add SupperPutty for GNS3, just download the SuperPutty and extract all files, then copy all files to the directory where GNS3 has installed.

2. When you copying files, it ask you to replace files. Simply replace the files in the destination folder and close the window. Then go to GNS3 Preferences from Edit tab to open the Preference page.

3. On the preference page click Console Applications tab. From preconfigured consoles select SuperPutty (Included with GNS3) and click Set. Now the default console application has changed to newly downloaded SuperPutty. Just apply and close all pages and open the console to see the SuperPutty with multiple tabs.

Remember current version of SuperPutty need dot Net framework 3.5 to be installed on your computer. If it’s not installed on your computer, try to install it from  Windows Features section. Open the Windows Features from control panel or simply type “OptionalFeatures” on Windows Run and press enter.

On the Windows Features page, select the .Net Framework 3.5 and click OK. If you don’t have internet or it’s time consuming task for downloading, use DISM command tool to install Windows features offline. How to Install Windows Features Offline Using DISM?

In GNS3 Network Simulator, when we drag and drop some devices like Router, an error is issued. The error is ” Could not connect to 127.0.0.1 on port 8000: [WinError 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it “.

It does not happen always but sometimes, maybe at the first start of GNS3 or sometime else refused by Antiviruses or Firewall software.

Unfortunately, it is not only on the Windows Operating system but I saw this error in Linux also.

How to fix GNS3 Errors on Windows?

How to Install GNS3 Network Simulator Step by Step

I try to install it on my PC and explain the process of installation for you to make a Network Lab for Networking and Penetration Testing.

Before install GNS3 network simulator, go to GNS3.net website and download the latest GNS3 for PC , Linux or Mac OS. Here I had downloaded for PC and going to install it on Windows 10. When the download has complete, run the GNS3 setup by double click on Setup file to begin install GNS3 Network simulator.

1. Click Next button in welcome page.

2. In choose start menu folder page click Next.

3. On the license agreement page click Next. It’s better to read the most important rules of this agreement.

4. The Choose Components page shows, which component you want to install. I need all but SolarWinds Response Time and SuperPutty. Click Next button to start installation.

5. When you see WinPcap Welcome page click Next. It’s the first components of GNS3, and others will be install on you system one by one. The installations are easy, just try to install them like a simple software installation.

6. Press the I Agree button to go to next page.

7. On the Installation options page put it by default and click next, When the WinPcap installation has complete hit the Finish.

8. Now the GNS3 will download and install some components from online repository. It takes time to download and depend to your internet connection speed. Wait until the Wireshark installation start.

9. Click Next on the Wireshark Welcome page.

10. Click Next on the License agreement page.

11. Leave the Choose Component page by default and click Next. These components are required to work with WireShark.

12. Click Next the Select additional tools page.

13. On install Location page click Next. Leave it by default or select another location to keep the WireShark files.

14. Deselect the Install WinPcap, because we have install it before and click Next to begin installation of Wireshark Network Sniffing Tool.

15. Click Next on the Installation complete page and then hit Finish button to continue. When the GNS3 installation completed, click Next to continue and finalizing the GNS3 installation.

16. Click Finish.

17. Finally, welcome to GNS3 on Windows 10. GNS3 installation has been finished successfully. Now you can open the GNS3 and create you network lab for testing CCNA Certification and CCNP Lab.
