Configure WinRM on Windows Server 2012 R2

This article is going to show you how to configure WinRM in Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 10 or Windows 8.1. The Windows Remote Management (WinRM) is the Microsoft implementation of WS-Management Protocol, a standard Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)-based, firewall-friendly protocol that allows you to control Windows Servers and clients remotely through command line interface.

How to Configure WinRM?

To enable and configure WinRM on Windows Server, you must login as domain admin user privilege and run the Windows remote management Winrm quickconfig.

OK, I assume that you have log on to Windows Server as domain admin. Now open the CMD or PowerShell as administrator.

Configure WinRM

Type winrm quickconfig and press enter. If ask you about creating firewall exception, just type Y and hit enter.

Winrm quickconfig

The Winrm is already configured in my Windows Server 2012 R2 domain controller. The next step is to test Winrm from a client PC.

Testing WinRM from a client PC

Login to your client PC as domain admin or a user that have access and the appropriate privilege for Windows Remote Management. Here I’m using Windows 10 as client user to test WinRM.

Configure WinRM on Windows 10

1. Fist of all enable and configure WinRM on Windows 10 which work the same as enabling WinRM on Windows Server. Just type winrm quickconfig and press enter.  To set the winRM service type to delayed auto start and HTTP listener press Y then hit enter.

2.  Let’s test it with Winrs -r: remote command if it work correctly in Windows 10.

WinRS

Yes, It works perfectly. The Winrs -r: is the remote service to connect us to Windows Server. Then dc1 is my Server name and next are the executable command which we are execute to Server. For example Net user command, Ipconfig or network Shell (netshetc.

That is all you need to know about configure WinRM and WinRS in Windows Server and Windows Clients. Hope you get something new from this article.
