The major downside to the cloud that nobody talks about is the up-time of the Wan. Your internet connection. In Australia at least, we have a general up-time of around 74% for business hours. Consider that in your day to day running of your business along with dodgy security and contracts that place the responsibility of security on the business as opposed to the Cloud provider, you can see that the cloud is not a realistic business solution except for encrypted backup. Even that can run in to quite high costs if you don't have the right plans.
Put simply, if you have guaranteed connection speeds and up-time along with security contracts that force cloud suppliers to take responsibility for security of your data you may have a case for cloud based computing, till then its just another trendy gimmick.
