For multi OS users, it’s great time to hear the Windows 10 is going to support Linux Bash Shell. Now we can use Linux Bash inside Windows 10 without Installing Linux on Hyper-v. The newest Windows 10 Fast Ring release, 14316, includes Ubuntu and Bash. It may not have a Linux foundation, but this is close as a Windows PC has ever come to also being a Linux computer.

I’m exciting to see what Microsoft will bring to the next coming update’s for Windows 10. But it’s important for a Sysadmin to combine Linux Shell and Windows PowerShell together.

Most Windows users really don’t know about Bash Shell. They only work with command prompt and PowerShell. The below short description is about what is Bash Shell.

What is Bash?

Bash is the GNU Project’s shell. Bash is the Bourne Again SHell. Bash is an sh-compatible shell that incorporates useful features from the Korn shell (ksh) and C shell (csh). It is intended to conform to the IEEE POSIX P1003.2/ISO 9945.2 Shell and Tools standard. It offers functional improvements over sh for both programming and interactive use. In addition, most sh scripts can be run by Bash without modification.

The improvements offered by Bash include:

  • Command line editing
  • Unlimited size command history
  • Job Control
  • Shell Functions and Aliases
  • Indexed arrays of unlimited size
  • Integer arithmetic in any base from two to sixty-four
